Global Warming Technofixes: Dust and Mirrors

2007-01-27

Dust and Mirrors. An answer to global warming? Or a distraction from the real issue?

The US Government is proposing giant space mirrors and reflective dust pumped into the atmosphere as ways to tackle global warming. But this may be a distraction from the real issue - reducing (US) greenhouse emissions.

Question: Will a myriad of small-scale technology applications be enough to stop global warming? Or will we end up resorting to grand projects with uncertain consequences?

Bizarre ideas? Bring them on.

Throwing bizarre ideas at the wall in case one sticks, can be productive of useful solutions. But don't forget to duck.

Exploding volcanoes have cooled the earth before, although I'm not sure anyone wants an exploding volcano in their backyard.

So, what's next? Leaving your car at home and catching the bus to work? Nah, not even Gee Dubya would go for that one.

Not addressing the issue

Putting a layer of reflective material around the Earth's atmosphere is not addressing the real issue which is the depletion of the planet's natural resources. We should be working towards a society that is not so wasteful. Also what side effects would this proposed layer have?

The U.S is probably trying to act like they are helping Global warming even though they contribute to 1/4 of it.

there is some hope

because of the amount of interest in global warming, there are a number of companies using it to promote themselves.

one such example i've found is http://thegreenroad.com.au/

In return for using their free map service to plan your trip, they offset all the greenhouse gases generated during that trip. So even though its a corporate promotion, the planet still benefits.
