"Christian Anti-Intellectualism" - William Lane CraigWilliam Lane Craig, in his article, Advice to Christian Apologists writes, "Charles Malik, the former Lebanese ambassador to the United States, in his address at the inauguration of the Billy Graham center at Wheaton College, warned American Christians of the danger of anti-intellectualism. He askedpointedly, Who among evangelicals can stand up to the great secular scholars on their own terms of scholarship? Who among evangelical scholars is quoted as a normative source by the greatest secular authorities on history or philosophy or psychology or sociology or politics? Does the evangelical mode of thinking have the slightest chance of becoming the dominant mode in the great universities of Europe and America that stamp our entire civilization with their spirit and ideas? Malik went on to say, It will take a different spirit altogether to overcome this great danger of anti-intellectualism. For example, I say this different spirit, so far as philosophy alone--the most important domain for thought and intellect--is concerned, must see the tremendous value of spending an entire year doing nothing but poring intensely over the Republic or the Sophist of Plato, or two years over the Metaphysics or the Ethics of Aristotle, or three years over the City of God of Augustine. But if a start is made now on a crash program in this and other domains, it will take at least a century to catch up with the Harvards and Tübingens and the Sorbonnes-and by then where will these universities be? For the sake of greater effectiveness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, as well as for their own sakes, evangelicals cannot afford to keep on living on the periphery of responsible intellectual existence." from http://abetterhope.blogspot.com/2008/07/christian-anti-intellectualism.html Christian anti-intellecualismAnti-Intellectualism Anti-Intellectualism in the Western World Pre-Easter Jesus (The historic Jesus) / Post-Easter Jesus (Christ of Faith)Pre-Easter Jesus / Post-Easter Jesus4 B.C.E. to 30 C.E. / 30 C.E. to present Corporeal, human being of flesh and blood Spiritual / non-material reality Finite and mortal / Infinite, eternal Human / Divine A Jewish peasant / King of Kings and Lord of Lords Figure of the past / Figure of the present Jesus of Nazareth / Jesus Christ Monotheistic Jew / Becomes the second person of the trinity, "God with a human face" Galilean Jew of the first century / "The Face of God" (metaphor based on 2 Cor. 4:6) From http://www.united.edu/portrait/compare.shtml Last Judgement: MichelangeloTo return to the Last Judgement: Michelangelo had already finished more than three~fourths of the work when Pope Paul went to see it. On this occasion Biagio da Cesena, the master of ceremonies and a very high-minded person, happened to be with the Pope in the chapel and was asked what he thought of the painting. He answered that it was most disgraceful that in so sacred a place there should have been depicted all those nude figures, exposing themselves so shamefully, and that it was no work for a papal chapel but rather for the public baths and taverns. Angered by this comment, Michelangelo determined he would have his revenge; and as soon as Biagio had left he drew his portrait frorn memory in the figure of Minos, shown with a great serpent curled around his legs, among a heap of devils in hell; nor for all his pleading with the Pope and Michelangelo could Biagio have the figure removed, and it was left, to record the incident, as it is today.from Vasari's "Lives of The Artists" (Translated by George Bull, Penguin; Middlesex, England: 1965; p. 379) BRIEF HISTORY OF THE APOCALYPSEBRIEF HISTORY OF THE APOCALYPSE - SOON!from http://www.abhota.info/endsoon.htm Unlike those daring prophets that set a date or time window for the End, many doomsayers hedge their bets by not gambling on a particular date, but instead merely insist that the end is coming SOON! This of course renders their prophecies untestable, but at the same time scary enough to bamboozle the gullible into believing them. SOON! has a nebulous quality about it: it could mean tomorrow, next year, or even a million yeas from now, long after the prophet and his followers are no longer around to lose face. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE APOCALYPSE - FUTURE from http://www.abhota.info/end6.htm 2010 The final year according to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Anyway, something is supposed to happen, and he has lots of pseudoscientific gobbledygook to back up his thesis. Dec 23, 2012 The world to end, according to the ancient Mayan calendar.
