Situational handicapping, fundamental handicapping, and technical handicapping are the three main types of sports handicapping. Descriptions of each of these, along with an example, are given here.
Situational handicapping is the first kind of sports handicapping. It involves looking at particular facts about an upcoming game to find out which of the two teams has the advantage. Game schedule and motivation for winning are two main factors that affect situational advantage.
As an example, imagine a basketball team that only needs one more win to complete a perfect season. This team would surely have a situational advantage over a team that, after losing two straight games, no longer has a chance to make it to the playoffs.
The second sports handicapping category is fundamental handicapping. Here, the strength and weaknesses of each team is weighed. This analysis, usually based on team statistics, allows bettors to determine which team has the advantage.
A basketball team, for instance, that is first in the league in terms of defense would undoubtedly have the advantage when playing against a team who has been ranked last in terms of defensive statistics. When placing a basketball bet, one would really need to pay attention to information regarding fundamental advantages.
Technical handicapping, or what is commonly known as "trend handicapping," is the third and last type of sports handicapping. In technical handicapping, bettors consider different type of statistical trends to see who has the technical advantage. One such trend is home game wins.
If a team called the Ravens wins against the spread (ATS) over 80 percent of the time when they play in their hometown, the Ravens would have a technical advantage when playing a home game against a team that has more ATS losses than wins when they are the visiting team.
