Things that go wrong in a flick

My baby dog Roxie

 

was nearly killed in an adventure in the back yard the day my last post was made.

 

She is such a cutey, but she also has a thing for chasing insects. My backyard has many flowers and other plants that attract beautiful butterflies, birds, ladybirds and many other insects. My problem this day was it also attracts bees. it seems my little cute puppy is very allergic to bees and she had been pawing it in her play until it stung her.

 

I guess I am lucky that the kids realised it was serious when she went all floopy after  being sick and doing number 2's at the same time. At first they just said she had been sick, so I said its ok she does that now and then, and they said NOOOOOO she is really sick so I rushed out, grabbed her into my arms and grabbed the car keys and a trip to the vet was in order.

 

When I got to the vet she was still non responsive and they saw her almost straight away. They gave her 3 injections and oxygen as she was almost grey when you looked at her gums. We stayed to watch her for sometimes until she regained some colour but she was very sick for a bit.

 

At the same time they suggested that she get desexed fairly soon, so I booked her in for Thursday just past and we had the deed done. She didn't cope very well with the pain and now she has the itches. She surely doesn't like the bucket to stop her biting, the poor thing.

 

Anyway I have a few pageant pics and some walking stories I will start adding from tomorrow.

Stormy weather

On day 5 of my pact to make myself fit I had promised my sister to wait and go with her when she came home from work. At 3pm Monday 7th of November it started to rain in a very hard and steady manner. By 6pm it was a really heavy downpour and you could tell it was setting in for the night.

 

My back yard was starting to flood at 5pm and you could clearly hear the creek from my house by 8pm. We joked to each other that it sounded like rocks rolling down the creek bed. Unfortunately we were right, that is what we were hearing a long with masses of water.

The rain went non stop until well after midnight. I was busy sweeping water off my back porch the whole night. The whole yard was saturated, the shed was flooded, but we were lucky compared to many who lived next to the creeks and rivers.

 

Tuesday the 8th of November many roads were closed especially into the hills. 

National Parks, and parks that line the creeks and river were also closed to public access so that the structural damaged could be assessed.

 

The Path, Many of the paths were unaccesable due to the flooded creek changing its channel. The first picture was taken Monday evening before the storm.

 

The second photo shows the path is now a creek. This photo is not taken in the exact spot as the photo as the first photo. The first photo was taken about 40 meters from this point where the path, now under water, used to start.

 

Heaps of damage was done and I have many pics, but I will only show a few of them.

Many of the roads were under cut and there are lots of pot holes now

 

 

Anyway, to make up for not walking day 5, I walked twice yesterday. 3 kilometers at lunch time, and another 3 kilometers after dinner.

 

I will be going again after dinner tonight and my aim is the 3 kilometer mark. I have already noticed that I am losing some weight from this extra activity I have started and that is pleasing.

Day 4: Them shoes them shoes

These shoes were made for walking...

 

 

or hanging on electricity wires!

 

Seems Adelaide is in the throes of a smelly sky epidemic and it doesn't matter where you go someone has thrown a pair of smelly sneakers over the lines.

 

I wonder how many throws it takes them to get them up there...

 

 

Day 4: Sunday.

 

My sister popped in with her kids on the way to her MIL's place so i asked her if she would be interested in going for a walk and dropping back in once they had visited.

 

She was more than happy as she feels her kids need to get more exercise, so we made a date for 5pm.

 

The day was overcast but very humid/warm, so everyone was still dressed in summery type clothing. Everyone was on time and ready including Roxie(the pup) who was just as excited as the kids, so off we went.

 

This time we decided we would go a little further and see how she (the pup) coped, so we negotiated to turn round at where the creek meets the road to the national park nearby, which we have measured as a 2 kilometer walk point.

 

As we walked we enjoyed the creek which is flowing nicely right now.

 

 

The frogs were croaking madly, and with the sounds of the water running over the rocks, it made for a relaxing, musical, ambient setting for a walk.

 

As we neared the park the atmosphere started feeling stormy and we started to hear thunder in the distance. After a while you could hear rain as it neared. my sister and her son wanted to go and find a hut, but I was determined I wanted to get this walk in so I pushed that we just keep walking and reminded her there was a hut at the halfway point.

 

We finally got to the hut after safely negotiating the creek via the stepping stones that wobbled every time you stepped on them. Unfortunately the hut was occupied and the kids didn't really want to go in so we decided to just brave the rain.

 

I love walking in the rain, especially when it's nice and warm.

 

As the pup got wet she looked like a drowned rat and she was able to slip out of her collar, i will have to get a chocker chain or something I think.

 

LOL, actually by the time we got home we ALL looked like drowned rats, but hey nothing a towel couldn't fix.

 

Tonight we have all agreed to walk togather again, this time I will push to walk a little faster and i want to goto the 3 kilometer mark.

Walking through a community

I have spent a little time walking through the community and collecting a group of bloggers today. ( I will be leaving some comments on many of them later)

 

In my life I have found that for a community to succeed, and to have people participate within it, there needs to be some response every now and then so you know your not talking to yourself.

 

Next time you pop on if you have the time have a look for another user and read one of their entries and leave them a comment, even if its just to say g'day to em.

 

Howdy to anyone who pops in and looks here. I have made a list of  some 45 blogger so far, go check some of them out.

Day 3: A walking we will go.

day 3: November 5th 2005

Well I was slack day 2 cos of all the pain I had from the day before I decided I would have a break and let my body fully heal

Today I woke up and I decided I wasn't going to have any excuses 

I decided I was going to teach my dog to walk on the lead at the same time as exercising myself

 

She is about 27 weeks old and adorable.

 

I had tried many times to get her to walk and she just freezes everytime then digs down to the ground

Itried from the house she simply wasnt going anywhere so I picked her up and took her over to the school

She did the same old thing then she saw two birds...ran as far as the lead would let her then dropped again

I kept trying to entice her, call her, reward her with pats and praise, when she did come it was only after much cajolling and only a few steps

Finally after about 15 mins of trying she came to the party  and started walking

At first she was sort of jumping around a bit every time the lead tugged, but then once she got the idea it wasnt going to hurt her and she could have fun walking and running we ended up walking about 1 kilometer, not bad for a start...but still tomorrow we will try again and see how far I can get her to go.

Right now she is laying on the floor next to me so tired she is worn out

DAY 1: Backdated to Thursday 3rd November 2005


Well buggy went on a camp this week for 5 days and the teachers needed help on Thursday so when I spoke to a friend Vicki we decided we would go up to Victor Harbor for the day and help out. 

A few other parents came up that day but only one of them stopped to help for any period of time that day. 

We were just going to do they daytime stuff and then go home, but the teachers didnt want to have to take 70 kids onto Granite Island at night so we ended up staying for tea and then did the walk.

Over all that day we walked 12 kilometres

We walked at Goolwa to the barrage that divides the River Murray from the sea water that can creep up the river spoiling it with salinity

 



While on the barrage on the river side you could see very choppy waters, then the other side where the sea water was it was a still as still could be. One section was opened to let the river flow and there was about 20 pelicans and numerous other birds hanging around catching fish that came through , we saw the most massive carp...if only we had a fishing line...we walked about 2 kilometres at the barrage.

Next we went back into the bus and drove down to Victor Harbor near Granite Island and had a picnic lunch and then we started the walk around the island.  

 



As I tend to walk fairly slowly and hobble a little I had the back of the pack role where I had to sweep anyone who managed to get behind me in front of me, a few of the quieter kids ended up walking with me and they just talked about life and the camp and their peers.

One of them climbed down the rocky side and took this tiny penguin pic for me, she actually turned the setting and it ended up a 5 sec movie



To walk to the island and around it you walk about 4.5 kilometres and after the island we took a walk down to a skate park and then back to camp which was about 3.5 kilometres away from the beach.

It was the most gorgeous place called Adare, it had been built in the 1830s and even had rupunzel's tower, although noone was allowed into the tower, every window in the place had lead lighting of some kind in it, and many pieces told tales of some sort.

As I said we were conned into staying there to help with the night walk.

The dishwasher to the camp site had broken, it is used for health requirements as all dishes must be sterilsed before being used by anyone, so I helped with the dishes for 80 people, the kids bought the dishes in and cleaned the tables

Once that was done it was time to go back to the island. Vicki and I drove down so we could leave for the 90min drive home as soon as the walk was over.

We walked another 2.5kilometres for the penguin night tour, they only let you round part of the island so as the penguin population can have a break the otherside.

The reason they have guided night tours now and guards to the island is 2 years ago someone decided to steal a baby penguin at night time and use it for a football (he only got two years good behaviour for that, I reckon they should of cut off his foot)

They have done some interesting studies on 40 nest on each side of the island and have found that the survival rate and the life span is much higher on the side that has no tourists at night time 2000 pengiuns habitat the tourist free side of the island at night compared to 800 the TS

By the time I had to walk back over the bridge from the island I was so sore I could barely move 



I hobbled back got into vicki's car and by the time I got home I was almost unable to stand it hurt so much, but I had a coffee then went to bed and wallah when I woke up I wasnt too bad at all

It was a great day...and it got me back on track finally 

I have made a vow,  I will do something about my fitness and walking capicity every day possible
