RT Social Club at Peel Zoo

{ 1:53 PM, 21/2/2007 } { Posted in Events } { 0 comments } { Link }
The recent RT Social Club event held at the Peel Zoo in Pinjarra was a great success and a great family day out.

Paul Kenyon gave a terrific talk on Tiger Snakes and Dugites.  These are the two species of venomous snakes most commonly found in the Perth metro area and they are also often mistakenly identified as other species.  Paul’s talk describes the personalities and habits of these species and how they end up in your backyard due to the growing housing development throughout Perth’s suburbs.  He also talks about the importance of Snake Bite First Aid having been the victim of a Dugite bite himself as a young boy.  Paul is a local snake buster who has been handling venomous snakes for over 20 years and removes unwanted visitors from backyards and relocates them to natural bushland away from people.  Paul will soon be a regular attraction at Peel Zoo with his venomous snake wrangling.  Stay tuned for more details…….

Karen from Radical Reptiles brought her menagerie of pythons that she uses in her school incursions.  There was Jemma the Black Headed Python, Jaws the South West Carpet Python as well as others that you could hold and have your photo taken with.  These radical reptiles were a huge hit!

Quite a few people took on Ken’s chilli challenge with our first ever Chilli Competition.  Ken himself took out the prize for the Tastiest Chilli Dish and Troy took out first prize for the Hottest Chilli Dish.  Then there was the Chilli-Off, with our two chilli die-hards, Ken and Troy, as well as a brave young fellow, the only three who dared to eat raw chillis whole!  The winner of the Quetzlzcatenango (D’oh) Trophy went to our youngest competitor.  Congratulations!

Peel Zoo was an excellent place to hold our Social Club event and our many thanks go to Tony and Narelle for their hospitality and their help with setting up the event.  With cuddly ferrets, a fox tame enough to pat as well as parrots, owls, kangaroos, wombats, deer, goats, geese and a whole lot more to boot, it was a great place for parents and kids to wander around at their leisure.

Thanks to everyone who came and made it such a wonderful day!

See you at the next RT Social Club event!
