Popular Tree Frogs

Newly Updated

Tree frogs are among the most popular animals to keep in a vivarium because they often anchor to glass sides or perch on vivarium plants.  These interesting little frogs can be kept with other small frogs and small lizards, which makes for a great display vivarium.  Inside this book you’ll learn how to care for these fascinating creatures, from acclimating imported species to housing, feeding and captive-breeding the frogs.  Written by experienced and recognized frog herpetoculturists, this book focuses on the care of popular tree frogs such as red-eyed tree frogs, White’s tree frogs, and white-lipped tree frogs.  A helpful section on diseases and disorders is also included.

“Sores and Injuries

Imported tree frogs may have abrasions on their snouts, skin sores, and physical injuries.  Herpetologists have had success in treating these problems by injecting enrofloxacin (Baytril) in the ventral area at a dosage of 10 mg/kg, repeated every forty-eight hours for up to two weeks.  With imported frogs, experts also recommend administering metronidazole, which is antibiotic to anaerobic bacteria.

Clouded Eyes

Most imported frogs have clouded eyes, a problem often caused by eye trauma, immune-system failure, or absorption of toxins.  To treat afflicted frogs, keep them in simple vivaria with paper towel substrate, ventrally injecting enrofloxacin at a dosage of 10 mg/kg every forty-eight hours for up to two weeks.

A poor diet, dirty tank water, or high ammonia and urate levels in the water can also cause clouded eyes.  Make sure all of your husbandry techniques meet your frogs’ requirements before administering medication.”
