Sometimes I wonder how Australia can possibly hope to compete on the world stage.
I mean, let's look at a simple thing then - mobile phones. We've moved an hour out of Sydney near the top of a mountain (well, by European standards it's a big hill, but it's the biggest hill we've got here, so it's a mountain). I can see Sydney from my front balcony; at night the lights of the city twinkle in the darkness.
I have two mobile phones (one for work, one personal), one on the Vodafone network, the other on Telstra's much vaunted Next G, which is a 3G network. Telstra is Australia's previously government-owned telecoms company, now partly privatised and run by a bunch of Americans with dodgy-looking moustaches on multi-million dollar salaries.
The 3G network is supposed to cover 98 per cent of the Australian population. Is that right? So how come I can barely get a signal? It's not like I live 400km from the next nearest house (how those poor souls communicate is beyond me, I guess they use smoke signals or have a drum thing going with the nearest neighbours).
Every time I make or receive a call I'm dodging around the house, clambering on the roof, hanging out of windows trying to get a signal. I see people all over the mountain doing the same.
So, us, an hour out of Sydney with nothing between here and there but fresh air can't properly use our mobile phones. Bonkers.
And don't even thing about using Vodafone, the world's largest mobile phone operator, you can't get a signal at all.
