Egg man walking...

You read those magazines where people have a tree-change and go to the country and it’s a land of milk and honey, the ambrosia flows (no, no, not the rice pudding, Merve, it’s food of the gods, mythical stuff from the time of, oh never mind) and the people wave to you as you pass on that fragrant country lane, blowsy with honeysuckle.
But when you actually get to the country you find that haute cuisine is not only spaghetti, it’s spaghetti with a fried egg on top.
Yes, I’m struggling to find anything that’s actually made in the country, except for long beards. Hereabouts you are judged by the length of your beard. If it is knotted and accompanied by a pair of milky blue staring eyes all the better.
But the good news is I found a farm where they have chickens and where they sell eggs. Now, in Australia supermarket eggs, let’s take the free-range ones, whatever that really means, cost about $5.80 for a dozen. I know. Well, these farm eggs are at the end of a long red-earth driveway so far from the homestead you can’t see it. The eggs sit in an esky (for you non-Aussies, this is a cooler box). You lift the lid and there they sit in their egg boxes. A dozen for $2.50. Excellent. You put your money in a plastic tub and off you go.
Five was shocked by this. He’d never seen honesty before, well not as it applies to the commercial world. “Dad, how come people don’t just take the eggs?”
“You’ve seen the blokes around here haven’t you?”
“Yes, they are very scary.”
“Exactly.”

....welcome to the Green Change. Even if it drives you mad, your kids will love you for it. We did our bit for the Tie-Dyed Cheesecloth industry, circa the 70's, and our youngest still has fond memories of selling second hand horseshoes at the front gate - and some sweet local actually buying them. Or maybe it was the tooth fairy. Who knows - but you're making great memories for the kids!

Well...

...I hope so. I do like the fresh air and no traffic, and the epeople are friendly.
