My Blog is Moving

Posted at 8:39 PM, Tuesday, October 31, 2006

In case you missed it, Telstra Corporation has secured an order to shut down www.blognow.com.au as early as November 1. It seems they are concerned that someone might mistake their website for the White Pages. They are attempting to copyright the terms "white" and "page" here in Australia to prevent the terrible confusion that might result should more than one entity be permitted to use those terms. Whitepage.com.au has been in the business of providing free blog space for the last twelve months, and there are now over 10,000 blogs appearing on this page every day. But no longer. As of tomorrow, I'll be shifting my blog to http://www.blognow.com.au/rabbiofoz where you can find it in all its beauty and excitement.

Telstra was in the news quite a lot a few weeks back. They have an American CEO earning an American salary for American-caliber CEO work, which is to say that Telstra's stock has been declining steadily since he took over. Telstra's petty move to shut down this little website would seem to be a very American-style action which will yield little gain but much bad publicity. As I stated in my e-mails to several Telstra executives, "Just because you can shut down this website doesn't mean you should."

That's all for now. I'll hope to see many of you tomorrow at blognow.

Hello!

Telstra, grrrr

I sent emails to Telstra's legal counsel and its president last night, after reading the details on the WhitePage web site. My main point was that not in my wildest dreams did I associate that site with Whitepages.com. I got back an almost instant answer from the president's office, a canned response about how the blog site had been warned even before it went online, and how little Telstra was just protecting its business rights. Poor widdle Telstra.
