ABOUT ANDONIA

I have lived and worked in Afghanistan and India, for 12 years. My husband and I worked with Ashiana, (an Indian organization which means Nest) to support many troubled people to re-establish their lives and reconnect with their families and communities. The way I dealt with our intense involvement with the lives of others was I to create beauty in the midst of the pain.
To relax I would lose myself in the ancient part of the city scouring the back streets of the markets, indulging my senses in the smells and colours, delighting in the fabrics and the jewellery bazaars. My senses were alive with colours I beheld in the corals and turquoises, the jades, moonstones, garnets and onyx and in the lapis, ambers, malachites and amethysts.
I made beautiful hangings and rugs and gorgeous needlework to beautify our small abodes. I found expression in my love for interior decorating, using Indian sculptures, paintings, ornaments and fabulous saris and shawls, hangings and lamps and gorgeous carved furniture.
The work of Tibetans, Indian and Nepalese traditional craftspeople captured my imagination and I have never stopped loving what I saw.

For the past 20 years since being back in Australia I have worked in settlement of refugees from Latin America, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bosnia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. I love diversity with a passion. I especially love the Africans’ strong use of colour in kaftans and headdresses and jewellery. I am fascinated with the use of jewellery in ornate hairstyles and with the tattoos on faces and arms. I have drawn what I was seeing and framed the pieces.
African jewellery uses a lot of amber and corals and I have incorporated these in the jewellery I make and sell in Brisbane markets including the University, Cannon Hill & Valley Markets.
Recently I was asked to manage the designer showcases at the Bead & Gem Show hosted in Brisbane.
I also showcased my own designs incorporating faceted gemstones, amazonite, corals, onyx, crystals, irregular pearls and potato pearls. I loved the atmosphere and met many interesting people. Some were able to buy my pieces. Others ordered pieces which I am making and posting to them. This was an incentive to continue to create beautiful designs in the wearable jewellery category. I hope to keep adding pieces to my gallery and gradually add strands of unusual stones and corals and turquoise for people to use to make their own pieces. My pieces can be made to order and strands of beads can also be ordered from me.
