Hope Against Hope

HOPE AGAINST HOPE
"Who against hope believe in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken ..."
Romans 4:18

Lord, there are some promises that I have been holding on to for an awfully long time. Some of them are general promises from Your Word, given to all Your people. Others are very specific and personal promises that You have given to me, either directly by Your Spirit, or as prophetic words through other people.

I know that You are always faithful to Your Word, and everything in me says that these promises are Your purposes for my life. I have clung to them for so long. Yet year follows year, each one slipping by before I have even had a chance to get used to its presence, and still it seems that I am no closer to the fulfillment of these words.

Sometimes I wonder whether it's me, Lord. Was I mistaken in claiming those particular Scriptures for myself? Did I mis-hear Your voice when I thought You spoke that promise? Did the prophet who spoke to me intend his words differently from the way I took them?

On the other hand, have I somehow mucked it up? Did I fail to move into the promise when I should have? Did some sin of mine cut me off from the fulfillment of Your Word? It seems totally impossible that those promises would ever come to pass.

Then I think of dear old Father Abraham. Both he and Sarah were already past it when You first gave them the promise of a son. Even if You had fulfilled Your word right that minute, it would have been a miracle. Then You kept them waiting for 15 years. I guess they also felt that it was never going to happen. Maybe they even questioned themselves, wondering whether they had heard right, or whether they had done something to lose the promise.

Yet even if he questioned and wondered, Abraham didn't let go. He just closed his mind to the evidence of his eyes, ignored the impossibility, and clung to Your promise. Lord, help me to be more like Abraham.

There is one God, and one mediator between God and man, the Man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5) in Whom all the fullness of the Godhead lives in bodily form (Colossians 2:9) and Whom God the Father has exalted to the highest place, giving Him the Name that is above every name, that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11).
