Friendship
... the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. I Sam 18:1
Lord, thank You for friends. Not the kind who are just casual acquaintances, people to whom we are nice and who are nice to us. Not the "networking" kind, to whom we relate because of the contacts they have. Not the "fair weather" friends who are all over us when things are going well, but disappear the minute it starts to get hairy. I guess each of those have their place in our lives. But what this verse reminds me of - and prompts me to thank You for - is the true friends.
True friends don't come along that often, but when they do it is very much like what Your Word says here - there is a real knitting of hearts. Somehow the other person becomes almost like part of us. We share his heart; we feel her joys and sorrows. The welfare of our friend becomes as important to us as our own well-being.
That sort of friendship isn't just for the good times. We continue to walk with our friend when things are rough. Even if we have disagreements, they only serve to strengthen the relationship. No matter what life may throw at us, we know that we will be there for each other.
Lord, those kind of friendships are so precious, and I thank you for the friends I have who fit into that class. Yet when I think about it, Lord, I guess You like to have that kind of friends, too. Friends who really want to get to know You as You are, not just at a surface level. Friends who don't just use their friendship with You to get what they want and further their own ends. Friends who stick with you through the hard times as well as the good times.
Lord, help me to be that kind of friend to You.

There is one God, and one mediator between God and man, the Man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5) in Whom all the fullness of the Godhead lives in bodily form (Colossians 2:9) and Whom God the Father has exalted to the highest place, giving Him the Name that is above every name, that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11).
