Star-gazing at Norths

Thanks to club sponsor the Full Moon Hotel in Shorncliffe, Owen, from the Wappa Falls Observatory, will have his giant telescopes at the last night of training on Friday 22 August.

From around 5.30pm - or once it'sdark enough - you can take turns viewing the craters of the moon in amazing detail, count Jupiter's moons - and best of all - see Saturn's rings.

Bring a beanie to keep warm. It's a fantastic show.

Club colours: an open letter from the Senior VP

To: The Volunteers and Parent Body
From: Tony Braithwaite (Senior Vice President)
Subject: Club Colours – Back to the Future

To All Stake Holders,

At last year's Annual General Meeting I put up a motion and it was carried for the closer alignment of the Senior and Junior Clubs at a playing level with the potential for closer co operation involving fund raising, our tenure at Shaw Rd and the use of coaching resources for our more senior age sides.

I can say that the seniors have been forth coming this year on several fronts as the following history indicates:
  1. Assistance with some of our U 15’s side.
  2. A $5,000.0 sponsorship from the Full Moon Hotel.
  3. BBQ staff during sign on period earlier this year.
  4. The senior clubs donation of their Barter Card credits which will substantially support our trophy day.

There has been numerous moments of support over recent years, in 1997 sponsoring the junior club when we were unable to pay some our accounts, from 1998 – 2003 providing field marshals and catering staff for the state carnivals and championships held at North’s and since 2001 a ready acceptance of invitations to attend training sessions for our senior teams, we only had to ask.

With the re emergence of North’s as a substantial Premier Grade force, there is now an opportunity for the juniors to once again run around in common colours, a reflection of ourselves as the providers of an ongoing and long term supply of quality players through the ranks and on into the senior ranks of our senior club, as some of us are aware this process has already started with the 86’ers and several following years of juniors already making their way into the senior ranks along with their volunteer base.

These ex juniors have contributed to this year’s seniors success. For those of us not aware of our heritage, I will give you a short history.

The Northern Districts Rugby Football Club emerged at the end of the 1990 season as a result of the QRU’s attempt to shore up quality rugby in the northern suburbs. It was the union of the Redcliffe and Teachers North’s RFC’s and was located at the Teachers North’s grounds at Shaw Rd as they had the most substantial infra structure.

I came along with the Redcliffe contingent and on the whole the amalgamation of the two bodies went with little stress. John Muir was the new clubs first President in 1991 and I held that post for the 1992/93 seasons. We made the finals in 1992 and didn’t win a game in 1993. The next few years were extremely bare. But both seniors and juniors played in common colours, a decision made with the amalgamation.

When an unlikely benefactor took over the ailing club in 1996/97 and changed the club to the Barbarians, a decision unpopular with the ARU, the juniors took the step to play in common colours. It was unfortunate that when the seniors changed again to their now playing colours they for some reason seem not to have consulted the juniors.

That was ten years ago and a long forgotten time. The time is right to re-engage with the seniors for all things rugby. This will not extend past our playing objectives. The seniors and the juniors are answerable to separate senior and junior playing bodies and as such will always remain administratively apart.

This is the formula practiced by all the senior clubs with junior affiliates, Brothers, East’s, West’s, GPS, South’s and so on. I will be putting a motion to the AGM that the junior body takes up a change in club colours to more closely indicate our ties to the senior club and take up the ‘Eagle’ as our symbol and once again call ourselves the ‘Junior Eagles’.

Back to the future. Yours in Rugby

Tony
Anthony J. Braithwaite (Senior Vice President)

Meet and greet for coaches

There will be a 'meet and greet' night for coaches this Friday night [6 June] after training.

Norths-QUT seniors coaches and premier grade team players will be at training to mingle with coaches, parents and young players.

The seniors will be taking some of the boys and girls for rugby drills, and the coaching staff, including Wallaby Chris Roche, will be at the clubhouse to catch up with our coaches, parents and players.

This is a great opportunity to forge some close ties with the senior club and get some advice and tips from some of the best coaches in Queensland.

The meet and greet will kick off at 7pm with drinks and nibbles.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Update on Shaw Road sports grounds

From the club President, Kerry Partridge

As of 1 May, the North Brisbane Junior Barbarians grounds at Shaw Road is being managed by Brisbane City Council.

Staff from the City Venues unit (who also manage Council's golf courses and sports centres among other sites) will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the grounds and the clubhouse.

The bar is still being run by the Administrator, mainly because Council can't operate licensed premises.

This opens up great opportunities for NBJB. We can now begin to plan our future, knowing that for the next 6 months or so, we have some stability with Council.

Running costs are yet to be determined but I am confident that they will be more in line with the costs being paid by other junior clubs around the city.

On your behalf, the NBJB committee will be meeting with Council and other user groups regarding our future needs and wants here at Shaw Road.

We will keep you informed and seek your input in due course.

U13 - U17 selection Sunday and U12 - U17 Possibles v Probables

U13 - U17 selection Sunday: 4 May
U12 - U17 Possible v Probables: 5 May

Please ensure that by 5pm, Thursday 1 May, Jo Nelson has received a completed team sheet, attached for you to fill in and return, for each of your teams trialling this weekend (ie all U13 – U16 teams) playing indicating player names, jersey numbers and initial their position eg Smith John (P, H).

Please ensure that in the comments box the names and contact numbers of the person who is to act as the contact for the rep selectors so that they can give them the list of players they wish to see at P V P the next day.

It will be this person’s responsibility to contact the players and ensure they are there for P V P. Failure to do this means your players are disadvantaged.

Contacts for the selectors: (Please see Jo Nelson to get the selectors name for your age group)

U13 = Katrina Skinner u13 Purple
U15 = Angela Bridges u15 Purple

Any changes to this can be discussed Friday night at the clubhouse. Please see Jo Nelson.

There may be a time change back to 11am for the u15 Blue. Jo will advise if/when the change is confirmed.

Use P = Prop, H = Hooker, L = Lock, 2R = 2nd Row, W = Winger, ? = scrum half, C = Centre, F = Fullback, F5 = First 5, 25 – 2nd 5.

This sheet does not have to be signed by the team but must be sent to me so that I can get it to the selectors on Friday afternoon for printing.

Make sure each player has their correct jersey on with numbers. Do not allow players to wear the same number.
