Norths U10 White 28 - 14 Brothers White |
Norths U10 White got its season back on track with a scrappy, but gutsy win over local rivals Brothers, 4 tries to 2. A couple of illnesses and a long term injury restricted numbers to 9, which opened the game up to the advantage of Norths. The first 10 minutes saw one converted try each. Will D. crossing for Norths first up, later answered by Brothers. But Norths responded, with some great passing play down the short side to see Tyrone stretch over for the second try and take a 7 point lead into the half time break. The second half was a tough affair. Brothers pressed, but Norths responded with some strong defence. In attack, Norths lacked the ability to recycle the ball from rucks and mauls, too often loosing it in loose carries and wayward passing out of the tackle after some good breaks. Norths’ third try came from a short tap penalty. Reece came close, but it was finished off by James from close range showing astonishing strength and determination. Brothers briefly got themselves back in the game after a rampaging run by their strongest lad with 8 minutes left. This made for a nervous last few minutes, but the game was finally settled by a fourth Norths try from Will D. Not everyone can be mentioned but, newbie John is finding his legs as a running talent and Will D. is now working well with Hamish in the midfield. Tyrone continually finds his target as an ‘attacking tackler’ from loose forward. And James battles like the hard-nut he is, and is also improving his half back passing fast. The team has great running talent and is aggressive in defence. But the team needs to do the bread-and-butter work in the rucks and malls to recycle the ball. Too many times the ball isn’t secured as players are more interested in getting their hands on the ball and going for a run. To win more games this season in a tough Division 1, U10 White has to work as a team and do the hard work, before they go for the glory stuff. The pack must work together as a unit and the backs must add width to their play. But a win is a win. And a win against Brothers is all the sweeter! |
