Offical Checkpoint

Hi.

I thought I would share my current thoughts and mental anguish.  Sorry, but they say it is good for the soul.

Argh, the Soul....  a$$hole for short.... ;)  Yes, this is a grumble.

I have been searching for sometime for something for nothing..... in the form of a FREE, Ad Free WEB Host. Why? It is a daily activity of mine and I use it to keep "relatively busy"...... sort of.

I have found several FREE Hosts, most of which have "mucked up" after a period of time........  so much so, that I fully expect that those left on the list not yet fully evaluated will do the same at some point.

As my general well being seems to be declining, I am almost over the whole WEB Thing..... it is getting too hard.

My vision is noticeably worsening.... and if I am honest, I feel bloody 'orrible most of the time.  I try NOT to think about it, as if I do, I realise that nearly everything hurts.

I am using a Wireless connection to the existing Internet connection at the moment and whilst it cuts down on the cost, it is only "ordinary at best".... and often just disconnects..... without notice.

I am really struggling to maintain my touch typing, as it is, and this makes it that bit harder to continue my work without adding to the frustration....

I am pleased with the results of my self induced study, but deep down feel it is coming to an end.  I have continually, or did, set myself learning goals to do with Internet development.  Having worked in Information Technology and "people" for some 20 years, I enjoyed every minute of learning what I did. I feel I have lost most of what I have got comfortable with over the years, almost to the point of being wound back to a beginner status.

Whilst it is not a sure thing, then again nothing is!, I may just disappear from being on-line so much, or at all, without notice.  I guess only time will tell.

If I don't get the chance to say so....

I have really enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people, and to all my cyber friends, I wish you all the very best in all things.

So far, I have managed to keep my sense of humour, and I hope I can manage to maintain it and to keep it.

So for now, ciao.  :)

I have a really bad and annoying habit of filing really cool sites and new trials in a safe place, an easy to find place.... only to forget them, and where they are for an undefined period.

This site is one of those..............

This is the latest cool find...

the more I play with it, the more I will write about it here.

Well worth a look, but really needs a High Speed Connection. (which I should have but currently don't).

Checkpoint

Time goes more quickly as you get older......
I am sure we have all heard that at one time or another... I know I have. Sometimes it seems like yesterday I was in and out of meetings and airport lounges; sometimes I think it was all a dream.

At the time of diagnosis (1998), I was as prepared as I could be. I had already asked the 'hard questions' of the Neurologist and it was time for the 'Official News'. I had gone through all the standard Neurologists’ standard tests.............  /more

Early Settler

An early call -  very early, considering my history; however the current template now holds the record.

I like how it lays out, it works on anything, as far as I can tell, with resolutions equal to or better than 800x600 screen resolution. It caters for my need to experiment without it adversely effecting the site ...... so far, so good.

FTP is not working today.

It failed just as I was uploading a new MS Links page. Typically, and as luck would have it, I lost the old version, failed to get the new version up to the server, and consequently there is no version available.

I am changing the mirror to include the latest MS Links Page.

Direction or Strategy

Summary....

I spend time every day changing something or other on MS WEB People. Lately, I have taken a bit more time on the detail. Fatigue just hits me at different times of the day. and whilst I know and understand that it is M.S. related and therefore leaves me with little I can do about it.

- I may even have settled on a final design, or two actually... one for Low Bandwidth Users and one for High Bandwidth users.

So far, I like the templates.... :)  I guess time will tell.

Have I finished the discovery phase, and am I ready to tell my story?

Science Fact

Modern science puts invisibility cloaks in sight

The development of new materials could see items such as invisibility cloaks, a key weapon in the trickery of Harry Potter and countless science fiction plots, become a reality within five years.

Two research groups have published technical blueprints for making "metamaterials" which can change how light and other forms of radiation bend around an object, in a way similar to water flowing around a rock.

An observer would see whatever was behind the object as if it were not there, said Professor Ulf Leonhardt of St Andrews University, whose research was published in the latest edition of the journal Science.

David Smith from Duke University in the United States, who has been independently pioneering the development of metamaterials with John Pendry of Imperial College London said the cloak would act "like you've opened up a hole in space."

"All light or other electromagnetic waves are swept around the area, guided by the metamaterial to emerge on the other side as if they had passed through an empty volume of space," Prof Smith told the Financial Times.

The developments have led to concerns about the ethics that might govern how such technology could be used. "Innovations such as these as fantastic, imaginative and useful as they might be would be disruptive to society today," said Patrick Lin, the research director of the US-based Nanoethics Group.

"For instance, the ability to become invisible will have profound implications for privacy as well as national security."

Lin insisted his group, which calls for open-mindedness and public debate about the development of new technologies, did not want to discourage scientists by slowing slow down their work.

"We're fans of technology and are excited about its possibilities just like everyone else," he said.

"Instead, we are encouraging ethicists, policymakers and the broader public to catch up on thinking through the enormous implications of new technologies in this case, before any privacy violations or security breaches may occur."

Smith's research has received funding from the US defence advance research projects agency, which sees possible applications for cloaking military hardware.

Experiments to demonstrate cloaking at microwave frequencies could give results within 18 months, Pendry said.

"But I don't think we will have cloaks for visible light for at least five years," he added.

David Schurig, another member of the Duke University research team, said there was no theoretical limit to the size of cloaking materials. They could be used to hide eyesores as large as refineries, he said.

Weird Wide Web!

I often ask myself... Why.

Why are there so many examples of unprofessionalism?

I may be wrong. however I am disappointed with how many: 'Corporate' Web Sites are not able to be read easily. *Vision Impairment needs me to be able to Zoom in on the page, either as a whole, or at least some parts of it. Now, I have sorted out the zooming for myself, what concerns me is the majority of users (as measured by Marketshare), those who use Microsoft Exploder. It often just fets it wrong, cannot be read, or if increased upsets the page layout so as to make it just too hard to read.

THREE Questions:

  1. Why don't Webmasters' adhere to the standards (e.g. W3c), in the interest of Increasing their readership, rather than encouraging the use of 'pretty', proprietary, often troublesome code.
  2. As the clear market leader, why doesn't Microsoft become a 'responsible' corporate citizen and cater for all users.... (even those with vision impairment).  Forget the attempted 'pseudo standards', stick to ya knittin' and do what you know.
  3. Why don't a lot of the 'script' providers ensure their code conforms.....  it is left with me, and I have to do it!

Home Page

I have re-designed the home page (in the interest of continuing research) and have got carried away that little bit. I seem to have settled, once again, on another new layout.

Current Template:

3 Columns
Centre column re-sizes based on Browser Window Size.
Main Content Holder

Left Column
Links etc

Right Column
Links, Banners etc

Using CSS as the layout regime, the site now works on all resolutions and window sizes tested. Anything from 640x480 seems to work and layout correctly *as intended*.

The site uses a combination of 'Absolute' and 'Relative' size units for both text and graphics...  Entire screens will zoom without losing page layout. This is one of those things you really don't notice until it isn't there.... and you wish it was.

Some PHP code adds a Random picture at each load. (there is a list of pics that I manage,...). There is also some rotating Wisdom which I like to read.

All pages conform to W3c standards (or they will shortly...).  This is really to ensure that all pages work on as many platforms and configurations as possible. Nothing is meant to work on only one 'browser'.

Too difficult? - Nope. This looks to be a) an easy to use, and b) feature rich. New Posts allow HTML and in-line CSS which greatly enhances the flexibility.
