New Book! Woo!

Okay so the votes are in..... the new book club book is............

So go off to A&R or Big W and get yourself a copy, and then start reading it!!

Something about the author:

Elizabeth Kostova is the author of The Historian (June 2005), a chilling historical mystery that reaches from the present day into the medieval past of Vlad the Impaler, Wallachia's barbarous 15th century ruler whose gruesome deeds gave rise to the legend of Dracula. In The Historian, Kostova's characters hunt the immortal Prince Vlad across twentieth century Europe, from ancient village to dank crypt in a quest to destroy the vampire.

Kostova, a graduate from Yale and The University of Michigan's MFA program, spoke with me about her novel which is quickly topping the bestseller lists

Book choices for next month (October)

Hello lovely people!

Okay so next month is Allistair's book choices. Here are the pictures and the books:

Flak by Michael Veitch

RRP $32.95

Michael Veitch's life-long obsession with the aircraft of the Second World War led him to conclude that every single person who flew, or flew in them has at least one extraordinary story to tell. With most of these veterans in their eighties, he knew that it was a matter of urgency to find them now, before their personal stories disappear for ever.

So, over the course of a year, Veitch interviewed over fifty former aircrew across Australia, many of whom had never spoken about their experiences before, even to their families. The result is Flak – a collection of vivid, unforgettable stories from RAAF veterans about their experiences of combat in World War II. It is also an account of the strange, sometimes obsessive journey of the author himself, as he explores a passion held since childhood.

From bomber pilots to fighter aces, from rear gunners to bomb aimers, from stories of death and fear to tales of humour and comradeship, Michael has helped unearth the extraordinary stories of ordinary men living and fighting in extraordinary times.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

RRP $28.95

When a young girl finds an ancient and disturbing book in her father’s library, she learns that her father is an expert on the real count dracula, the dreaded vlad the impaler. Gradually she discovers the links her parents have with the dreaded count and the impact this will have on her own life. This gripping and intense tale of vampires has become an international bestseller.

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

RRP $20.95

Morrie Scwartz, college professor, understood Mitch Albom when Mitch was young and searching, helped him see the world as a more profound place, gave him sound advice. As Mitch made his way in the world, as Mitch's insights faded and the world seemed colder, Mitch lost touch with his mentor. But in the last few months of Morrie's life, Mitch rediscovered his professor, and had the chance to ask bigger questions, to once again benefit from the older man's wisdom. Tuesdays With Morrie tells the story of the two men's rekindled relationship, and of Mitch's one final 'class': lessons in how to live.

Finally a new entry!! Sorry!!!

Hello everyone!

Sorry I haven't actually updated when I said I would, been extremely busy. Okay after lengthy discussions, Janet and I have decided to change the theme of the next bookclub meeting (the one that was starting with 'T' not the flower one, so keep reading purple hibiscus!). This is because the book you all voted on last time is actually out of print. The new theme will be 'At the movies'. The new titles to choose from are as following:

Like Water for Chocolate - Laura Esquivel
A culinary romance set in Mexico. Condemned by tradition to look after her tyrannical mother and remain a spinster, Tita finds her destiny in the kitchens of the family ranch. Her recipes for Mexican dishes are woven into the story of her doomed romance with Pedro, her brother-in-law.

Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden
A fictional memoir of a celebrated Japanese geisha describes how, as a little girl in 1929, she is sold into slavery; her efforts to learn the arts of the geisha; the impact of World War II; and her struggle to reinvent herself to win the man she loves.

Widow for One Year - John Irving
Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character - a "difficult" woman. By no means is she conventionally "nice", but she will never be forgotten. Her story is told in three parts, each focusing on a critical time in her life.

The 5 People you Meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom
Elderly amusement park maintenance worker Eddie dies while trying to save a young girl who gets in the way of a falling cart. In Heaven he meets five people who where unexpectedly instrumental in his life, discovering with each what he was supposed to have learned and what his purpose on Earth was.

Also, we are changing the date that we next meet on. This will be the 28th of July, just a week after we were supposed to meet (20/7/06). This is because I am about to start a new job, and the week of the 20th would mean I'd miss yet another book club meeting and leave Janet to fend for herself!! See you all soon! Again if there are any questions, call Janet or I at work!!

Next book club meeting!

I've decided to make a blog for our bookgroup, because then I won't forget to email anyone, and it will be a lot easier. Please feel free to comment, or leave suggestions. It was my bright idea in the shower! P.S I have gone slightly mad...just a little.

Okay, first things first. Our next meeting will be at Babar's again, at 6pm on Thursday the 15th of June. Please email me, or call Janet or I if you are unable to attend, so we have an idea of how many people to book for!

Hope you're all enjoying Almost French! I will update this regularly, so keep checking back. See you all soon

Ange
