This is the pile of stuff that I got together, supposedly to represent me. I was just going to show you my phone (with the cutest little baby pen phone danglies), but then I got carried away.  So... I guess this just about sums me up.

What about you guys? I'd love to see how you would all define yourselves. Any takers?

Yours is very interesting though, a wide variety of bits and pieces :-)

Apparently I come across as an outdoor dunny :-P

Hang on where's the camera? Oh that's right it is attached to your face - I remember now :-P

As for the pliars... and the brush... and the sandpaper... all things that I use for my rock fetish. I use them to shape and polish small rocks and stones. I couldn't forget them. There's also pens and pencils to represent my stationary fetish. The batteries... alternate energy source, of course. The keyboard... we all love them, don't we? And of course, there's my phone... can't go anywhere without that... and did I mention my cute little mini pen phone danglies? They're just sooo cool.

• Tuesday 9 January 2007 - Oh... errr... ummm..... TAG!!

Permanent Link
Well, there I was this morning, walking into the computer room with every intention of finding some photos to post on my blog for a change. "But I might just have a quick look around first... read some friends' blogs... catch up on some stuff... ya know...??" So I sat down and started reading. Snowy's blog mentioned somewhere about a game of tag bouncing around. Snowy's blog led me to Deenas, then plonka's, then cc's... and hers led me to AngelaJames' (and no doubt there are others out there... sorry if I haven't found yours yet). "Cool..." I thought... "It's a reading tag... I can handle that. I like books. And it'll be interesting to see what everyone else is reading at the moment... you can tell a lot about people by the books that they're reading. Count me in... I'm jumping on the end of this conga line." It looked like a bit of fun... the photos could wait for a bit longer...

You see, the last time I was tagged (by plonka), I didn't have the time to really sit down and respond. At that time we barely read our friends' blogs more than a couple of times a week... forget the actual posting. But, I was disappointed that I hadn't responded properly (sorry about that, Ted), so I had to put my hand up for this one. I was about to find a book to quote from when I stopped to think. "Now, should I use the closest book, or something that I'm reading now? And which book should I use?" (You see, I rarely read one publication at a time... usually just little snippets out of sometimes up to a dozen things at a time... and this may include books, mags, journals, info stuff, etc. What can I say... I get bored easily.) So I had a better look at the rules. The rules said...

These are the rules:

Find the nearest book.-
Name the book and the author.-
Turn to page 123.-
Go to the fifth sentence on the page.-
Copy out the next three sentences and post to your blog.-
Tag three more folks.

"All right... literally... the NEAREST book... let's see..." *looks around* "... here, on the computer desk... a copy of the Australian Readers' Digest... Jan 2007 issue. Ok then... let's see... page 123, eh??... Hang on. Oh... that's not fair. There on pages 122 and 123 is a photo of Todd Russell and Brant Webb peering out through a tiny hole in black rock. There's barely any words, just the article intro..."

BONUS READ
BURIED ALIVE
They were trapped 925m underground in the dangerous depths of Tasmania's Beaconsfield goldmine. Few people believed Todd Russell and Brant Webb would make it out alive
BY TONY WRIGHT

123

"What!!!? That's it?? Oh, come on." (I now feel a sense of anti-climax.) "That's not fair. Fine, then. I'll go and find something else! I wasn't even reading the smelly old Reader's Digest anyway." I get up to go looking for some of the literature that I HAVE actually read lately... and I resolve to make another cup of coffee while I'm there.

So, upon returning to the computer room armed with coffee and with several of my recent (albeit short) literary journeys under my arm, I sit down to see what I've got to deal with. We don't have a lot of stuff here, and the only things I've read lately have been the odd book that I've plucked off the bookshelf when I was bored. I discarded the idea of using the mags and newspaper that I was browsing this morning. They don't count anyway... they don't even have 123 pages... and at least one mag would've had a hard time squeezing 8 sentences on one page... in between all of the pretty pictures. So I've settled on a few that I think are pretty cool. On top of the pile is the novel that we gave Miss 18 for christmas. I was going to wait until she's finished, but I have been sneaking the odd quick peek... shhh, don't tell her...

Lisey's Story by Stephen King.
"Page 123... let's see... fifth sentence, wasn't it? Yep, there it is... now the next three..."
"...Some sort of smile, anyway.
     'Wait,' he said.
     'Wait?'

Hmm... doesn't that make you wonder what's going on? I've only just started this book and I haven't read that far yet... I might focus on this one a bit more, I think. I need to know what's going on now. But, that still didn't satisfy my need to type some random crap. There's no use doing things by halves, is there? "Ok then, let's have a look what else we've got...

Guide to places of the World, eh? Another Reader's Digest publication... oh shit..." *grunts*... "this thing weighs a ton." Oh well, shouldn't have too many problems finding what I'm looking for here... there's heaps of pages... and sentences. "Page 123?... Hmmm, Cameroon (in Africa)" Sentences 6, 7 and 8 say...
Starting in the north, it ranges from low-lying lands on the southern shores of Lake CHAD, through the semidesert SAHEL to dramatic mountain peaks (the Kapsiki mountains north of Garoua). Then come grassy savannahs, rolling uplands (the ADOUMAOUA MASSIF), steaming tropical forests, and neat coffee, cocoa, rubber, banana and hardwood plantations. Finally, there are rain-drenched volcanoes - the highest active cone is Mount CAMEROON (4095 m, 13 435 ft) - and palm-fringed beaches at Kribi and LIMBE.

*phew*
Now that was more like it... worth the effort, at least. There's lots of impressive words to type there... and it sounds nice too, doesn't it? Apart from the heat... and the lions... and rampaging elephants... and the possibility of being buried alive by molten lava... and the tsetze flies...
"Ok, let's try something fun... Heh heh heh, this should be good..."

The Dinkum Dictionary
A ripper guide to Aussie English by Lenie (Midge) Johansen.

"Heh heh, sounds like something I could send my new friend Paul. He might actually be able to make real sense of Kitty if he had one of these." I opened up to page 123 (after losing track of what I was doing a couple of times... *giggle* *chortle* ... we ARE incredibly funny, we aussies, aren't we?)... Now, being that this is a dictionary and doesn't have sentences, as such, I've decided that each word entry should be about the equivalent of one sentence, there's not much for each one... alright then, that's settled. Down we go... past fancypants, fandangle, fandangled thing, fandangs and fanging for a feed... there...

fangs
teeth.
see also:
put the fangs in.

fanny
woman's vagina; female genitals, pudendum.
see also:
sweet Fanny Adams
flash fanny at the Fowlers

fantabulous/fantasmogorical/fantastic
wonderful; excellent; marvellous.

Well, I never... there's not much more to say, is there? Except...

TAG!!! YOU'RE IT!!!!!!

*runs away laughing like a loon*

Yours was much more interesting. But I must say Readers Digest doesn't count as a book.

I think I cheated as well. The closest book was about 25 years of portfolio theory and the next one was Free to Choose which is a bit wanky... not that a book about English Literature is that much better. Permanent Link

Permanent Link
Here's another little tit-bit that someone sent me. I laughed and laughed and laughed... but only because I'm such a big Wiggles fan. Many hours of stress-free, whinge-free time have been awarded me by this particular band, and I will be forever grateful for that small mercy. For that they have become akin to semi-gods to me. I'm even willing to happily accept Sam as our new Yellow Wiggle... even though I personally believe that the Yellow Jersey should have been retired alongside Greg. Sam should have been the Green Wiggle...or the Orange Wiggle... or the Peuce Wiggle, I believe.

However, one has to wonder about a kids' band who can release something as... ummm, how do I put this... as slightly odd as the following clip (dubbed the 'Creepiest 4 minutes of children's TV ever'). These puppets seem to have something wrong with them... some of them are just downright scary. And I have a few questions? What is Greg doing with his finger there? What did Anthony see that was so frightening? Why doesn't Jeff look sleepy? How did they make Murray's puppet look so life-like? And why is Dorothy the only real character in the clip? Check it out. It's as funny as .......

I'm not sure if it's technically a bra..., but it IS a little disturbing, isn't it??... It makes me wonder how they came up with the idea... were they sitting around the table after a few turpses one night giggling to themselves about how successful they ended up being? Did Greg turn to Anthony and say "I reckon we could get away with anything... We're the Wiggles." Was it the result of a drunken dare, perhaps? I have to wonder.

Anyway, I still think it's funny. Anything that can make me laugh that hard has to be good.

And thanks Heather, we're all healthy and have a modicum of happiness in our lives. We've had a lovely christmas, and our new years' is looking fairly busy already. I'll blog about what's been happening soon, I promise. I just need to get some spare time first... there's lots to tell.

Permanent Link
We went to a place where the colours were weird,
There were strange trees and shrubs and a bird with a beard.
This bird, called the Curved About Snoozle has a very long snout,
And it couldn't find Buzzalugs in the blue grass without.

The plains of the land were enormous and vast,
except for the Purple-leafed Pop-Bottom trees that we passed.
They are made from a stuff that looks like pink candy,
But there's not many left 'cause their leaves are quite handy,
For making cool hats, fluffletop shoes and  grass skirts,
And flowery, funky summertime shirts.

We walked for a week and a half in the sun,
We started by walking but then we did run.
Through the pink grassy hills that the Fudgie Bird dreads,
With the leaves of the Waffle Bush shading our heads.

We saw a Snotty Top bird in an Uppalot tree,
And asked him what there was in this new land to see.
"I don't know... don't go out much," the little bird said
"I'm too embarrassed by the green stuff that grows on my head".

We saw Pink Snapping Squirtle Turtles, flocking together,
All discussing in earnest the state of the weather.
We tried to talk to them, next to the water,
But they were quite rude. "We'll squirt you, we oughta".

We were showered all over by Turtle rain drops,
Then we headed towards the Wangalong crops.
We were hungry by then and feeling a bit pasty,
And we'd heard that the Wangalong tops were quite tasty.
We walked a bit longer and climbed up a hill,
Then we saw them there... yummy... so we ate our fill.

Now we met a Half-Footed, Long-Necked Swimmalong bird,
Who was really quite friendly, from what we had heard.
The rumours were true, about this bird that was blue,
We interrupted her lunch of Red-slimy Goo,
She wasn't perturbed, in fact she was nice,
She gave us directions and sang for us twice.

"Just go up the road past the Wave-to-me Trees,
But watch out for the Grumple Ducks, they like to eat knees.
And come back for a visit when you want some more fun,"
So we set off down the path at a pace like a run.
The Wave-to-me Trees were the Windy Up kind,
And we stopped for a rest, in the shade, down behind

Then the Grumple Ducks came, with their blue beaks and feet,
And despite their bad nature they looked very sweet.
But that was not true, they chased us for miles,
With their curvy-down necks and their vexatious smiles.

We ran quickly away from those violet pests
Past the Marshmallow Fluffies lying down on their nests.
"Oi, you bullies should leave those poor kiddies alone,"
They said. "You big meanies should really go home.
Run away little kiddies and run very fast,
You'll be right when the Fuzzle Fern trees you are past."

Then we saw our salvation ahead of us there,
The tops of the Fuzzle Fern trees... Did the Grumple Ducks dare
To follow us through to the land of Bling Bling?
Which was ruled by the Crown-Headed Ruby-Caped king.

The Ruby-Caped king, with his always-on crown,
Saw the mean Grumple Ducks chasing us, down on the ground.
"Stop taunting these children by chasing their knees,
You're acting like gooses, so go away, please."
Said the king with a voice that was regal and austere.
"Just leave them alone, you Grumple Ducks there."

They went back to the place from where they had come,
The king said, "I'm having some ice-cream. Would you like some?
Despite his appearance he wasn't a smarty,
He knew how to boogie and threw a great party.

Our journey was over, we had to go home.
We hope you've enjoyed our frivolous tome.

How remiss of me. This was a collaboration effort. I couldn't have done this without gryphonn's help. Some of the funniest stuff is his.

We saw some of the trees when we first got to the gardens, and they reminded us of the trees in the Dr Seuss stories. And then we saw weird stuff everywhere. It was like walking through Dr Seuss land... hence the idea.
And any Dr Seuss fan knows that the colours have to be bold and weird, so what better excuse to play with photoshop?

Oh, and I did think about approaching Dr Seuss' publishers... what do you think? Do you think they'd like it?

Just a quick one... my sister forwarded me this joke. I thought it was quite funny, so.....

A woman rubbed a bottle and out popped a genie. The amazed  woman asked if she got three wishes. The genie said, "Nope, sorry,  three-wish genies are a storybook myth. I'm a one-wish genie. So...  what'll it be?"
The woman did not hesitate. She said, "I want peace in  the Middle East.
See this map? I want these countries to stop fighting  with each other and I
want all the Arabs to love the Jews and Americans  and vice-versa. It will
bring about world peace and harmony."
The  genie looked at the map and exclaimed, "Lady, be reasonable.  These
countries have been at war for thousands of years. I'm out of shape  after
being in a bottle for five hundred years.. I'm good but not THAT  good! I
don't think it can be done. Make another wish and please be  reasonable."
The woman thought for a minute and said, "Well, I've never  been able to
find the right man. You know - one that's considerate and  fun, romantic,
likes to cook and help with the house cleaning, is good in  bed, and gets
along with my family, doesn't watch sports all the time,  and is faithful.
That is what I wish for...a good man."

The genie let out a sigh and said, "Let me see the f*cking  map again."

Just for the record..... I've got the last one. Sorry girls.

How clever are crows? No doubt you've heard the story about how a crow will pick up rocks and drop them in a bucket of water to raise the water level high enough so they can drink from it? Well, I've actually seen them do that. And they know that cane toads are poisonous. If a crow ate one whole it would die... because of the poison glands. But I've seen them land near a squashed toad on the road, pick it up by the hind leg, flip it over and pick out it's guts. Then when that's all gone, leave the rest of the toad where it found it. That's pretty clever.

Oh, and when I was a kid we used to have a hard time with the crows raiding the vegetable garden and eating the fruit in the orchard. They got used to the scarecrows... would even sit on them... so they became useless. My dad used to shoot at them so they learned to recognise a rifle, and if they saw him with it they would fly away well before he had the chance to get any of them. But sometimes he wasn't at home, so we kids would pick up a stick, aim it at them and yell "BANG". They knew that it was just a stick though, and would just sit in the trees and cackle at us. But when they saw Dad come home and get out his rifle... off they'd go again.

Then this morning I got even more confirmation on their intelligence. It made me chuckle, so I had to tell you about it...

I pulled into the car park out front of Little Miss 8's school and noticed something that I hadn't noticed before.... something a little odd. The 4WD parked next to us had a doona folded up so that it was as wide as the car and laying half on the bonnet, half on the windscreen. I was wondering why Mrs XXX (a teacher's aide) had left a doona on the bonnet of her car... perhaps she'd bought it along to use for a picnic and forgotten it? ... perhaps her knees got cold in class? ... perhaps she intended on donating it for the fair, or something? I wasn't sure... but I thought it was a bit odd.

Then I looked across the way and noticed that the two teachers' cars had towels rolled up and left in the same position. Curiouser and curiouser. I must have looked confused, because before I could say anything about it, Little Miss 8 gave me the answer as she climbed out of the car.

"The crows have been stealing the windscreen wipers," she told me. "They sit on the bonnet and lift up the windscreen wipers with their feet, then steal the rubbers off them. So the teachers have been using towels to wrap around their wipers. Mrs QQQ has plastic tubes that she puts over hers."

I had to laugh... Sorry teachers. I suppose I wouldn't think it was so funny if they were pinching mine, but I had to laugh anyway.

When I was walking the other morning, I was watching a mother possum with a baby under her belly going hand over hand along a wide stretch of power line across the road, from a group of trees on one side over to a group of trees on the other. Quite precarious, as if she had lost her grip both would have fallen onto the road. Then these two crows came from nowhere, started bouncing the power line by landing and taking off in opposing sequence, shaking the wire like hell and bouncing her all over the place. It was very calculating and quite breathtaking to stand and watch her hanging upside down, trying to hang on, the baby trying to hang on. Then the mickey birds came to the rescue, started bombing the crows while the mother possum continued her escape. No doubt they were looking for stunned baby possum on the road to eat. I hate the sods. Permanent Link

That's my attempt at the horrific noise the wretched birds make.
Crows are obviously going to take over the world. They scare me more than magpies do, and believe me, after my altercations with many a magpie, that's saying something.
There's something so ominous and evil about crows. They're crafty. Sneaky, even. I wonder what they were doing with all the rubbers from the windscreen wipers? Probably creating a thermonuclear device or something. I'll be watching them :-) Permanent Link

I remember watching Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' all by myself one dark night when I was thirteen. I was too scared to go to bed until my parents came home!

My cat hates them too. The 'twenty eight' (so named because they have 28 different colours on their bodies) parrots we have around here congregate in the huge old redgums. They wait until the cat walks below and then they all chew off gumnuts and throw them at her.

I've seen it too many times for it to ever be thought of as coincidental! Permanent Link
