• Saturday 19 August 2006 - Procoptodon Goliah

This one I've included purely for interest value. This giant kangaroo-type animal, Procoptodon Goliah, was the largest kangaroo that ever lived. It stood up to 3 metres tall and weighed several hundred kilograms. It had a short, rounded face and longer arms that the kangaroos that we have today. They became extinct somewhere between 30 000 and 40 000 years ago.

So why is this so interesting? Because we have personally found fossilised remains of these animals, but not today and not in this area. When we lived in The Caves we found quite a few fossils in the creeks that were on our little piece of paradise. One favourite I gave to my young neice-in-law... a girl with an interest in rocks and fossils (always good to see). I thought at the time that it may have been the head from an animal related to a wombat, but nope.
Look, K... this is what it is.

And my most favourite fossil of all is a small Procoptodon foot which has been bent over and partially encased in limestone... probably the result of a mud slide or something. Here it is, but remember, we didn't find this here today... although where we did find it was only a few kilometres away.

• Monday 7 April 2008 - Try the Queensland Museum

Posted by tinacee
Hey guys. Well, I'm really happy to see you here. It's good to see that my stuff is being used as a research tool. I'm sorry that I haven't got much here to help you though. There wasn't much information available at the dig that day. And procoptodon is still a relatively new discovery, so I don't even know how much the experts actually know.

I do have an idea though. Try contacting the Queensland Museum and send an email to a man called Scott Hocknell. He was the man in charge of the dig at Mt Etna, and is the curator of the Palaeontology & Geology Geosciences department. He's also a vertebrate palaeontologist and was the Young Australian of the Year 2002. AND he's been involved in writing several children's books about dinosaurs, so he must know what he's talking about, hey? I think if anyone could give you the information that you're looking for, it would be him.

This is the Qld Museum page that will tell you all about Scott. He's a nice guy and I'm guessing that he will try to reply to you... he did when I had some questions a while back.
http://www.qm.qld.gov.au/organisation/staff/detail.asp?StaffName=Hocknull,Scott
There's some contact details down at the bottom of the page. Have a go at that and if you get some time, let me know what you find out about procoptodon. I'd love to know some more about this UUUGLEEEEEEE guy myself.

And you can have a look at the Wikipedia page too. Here it is.

I have to agree with you. I'm glad that today's kangaroos are not like this. I've seen some big reds in my day, but this guy would have stood almost twice as tall as even the biggest ones, and was a lot more muscly. And I think he looks like he's run into the back of a truck. :o)

As a point of interest, I do know that they had bigger arms and claws too. Their hands had two rather large fingers with long claws that I guess they used to pull their food (like wood or bark) apart. And their back feet had a longer and thicker middle toe with a really big, thick toenail that more closely resembled a hoof. Even though they were plant eaters, I don't think I would like to come across one in the wild. Scary!

Another thing that I know is that this area shows evidence that it was once a part of a large rainforest, sometimes called Gondwanaland. So it's likely that procoptodon was a rainforest dweller (like a tree kangaroo), rather than a plains dweller like today's red and grey kangaroos. To me, their body shape looks more like a wallaroo, which is slightly smaller than a kangaroo with larger, musclier arms and legs. Have a look at the photo on this site and tell me what you think... http://www.fourthcrossingwildlife.com/common_wallaroo.htm

Keep up the reference work guys. You might be surprised at the interesting stuff that you can find out.
