I am pleased to say that I received some wonderful comments about yesterday's blog (Let's go nuclear). I must admit that I half-expected a bit of a bashing about my political comments, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see that most of us can still focus on the important issues.
The reason for this short update is to urge you all to check out everyone's comments, if you haven't done so already. I made a rather long reply to those comments myself. I was going to make the reply here, but I wanted to keep it all in the same forum. I didn't want to make another long rant that some of you might get sick of and turn off.
I read a White Page blog by a young girl (I won't advertise her identity here), who was campaigning for nuclear power by using ridiculous arguments... and it scared me. This girl couldn't be bothered to spell correctly... or use correct grammer... in her blog, yet she quoted 'facts' that she obviously had no idea were completely wrong. These were 'facts' that had been fed to her, she believed them complacently... and then regurgitated them, probably word for word without bothering to check on the real facts. It was blatantly obvious to me that she really had no idea... and it scared me. When I was younger we couldn't turn around without Greenpeace forcing the truth down our throats... but it worked. My generation took the time to think, and then they used their brains to react. And that's why the government hasn't succeeded in bringing this evil to us... yet. Now it's getting too close again... and it scares me.
This IS an important issue. It IS worth fighting for. PLEASE take the time... PLEASE make the effort to voice our concerns. We are NOT being given the whole story on nuclear power. WE are the ones who are going to have to compromise if we let this through. Use your brains, then use your voices... then use your feet if necessary, and let's do something about this.
NO NUCLEAR REACTORS IN AUSTRALIA !

So is nuclear power all that bad? Well, yes, when misused! Or if the plant is not set up correctly (such as Three Mile Island and Chernobyl). I don't want one in my backyard or near any population centres. But what about in the middle of the desert?
I heard a news report that the biodiversity around Chernobyl is actually better than most places - no humans to screw it up! And the mutation rate in the Nagasaki/Hiroshima population is less than 1% higher than the rest of the population.
Don't get me wrong, the Chernoby; disaster was just that, a disaster. And a disaster that might have been avoided.
But what alternative?
What we need to do is to improve the technology so that we have safe nuclear fusion, which has few or no nasty side-effects; better efficiency from renewables and more forms of renewables.
We all should try to use less power too, to reduce our dependence. Bit hard if you are a computer junkie like me!
