3000 km Journey for Boab

4 October 2008 7:26 AM

This is not exactly "new" news, but I hadn't heard about it until I received the latest issue of Australian Geographic - maybe you hadn't heard about it either.....

The full story and a series of photos are on the Kings Park and Botanic Garden's web site but in brief, a Boab (Adansonia gregorii), believed to be about 750 years old and weighing 14 tonnes, was transplanted from it's old home in the Kimberley to a new home at Kings Park in Perth - a distance of  over 3200 km.  The tree apparently needed to be relocated due to works on the Great Northern Highway.

The relocation started on 14 July and the tree arrived in Perth on 19 July where it was placed in a pre-prepared location.  The relocation required a 25 metre truck trailer, two traffic lanes and police escorts.

On the Move!

Will it survive?  It's too early to tell but initial signs look good, apparently,  and Kings park has successfully transplanted boabs before, but nothing on this scale.
