Franklin River 25th Anniversary

27 May 2008 11:10 PM

On December 14th 1982, the Tasmanian Wilderness Society began an on site blockade of construction work on a dam to flood the Franklin River in south west Tasmania. This action was the culmination of 7 years protest against the proposed dam.

On 1 July 2008, the Federation Ballroom at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Hobart will be the venue for a special event commemorating the  25th Anniversary of the High Court decision which saved the Franklin River.

Speakers will include Greens Senator Bob Brown, Professor David Bellamy, former Prime Minister Bob Hawke as well as musician Shane Howard and many more. Listen to the stories, see the pictures, hear the music, catch up with old friends over a drink a bite to eat and pay homage to a magnificent river saved.

For further details see the Franklin River 25th Anniversary website.  Included on the site are two You Tube videos showing the Franklin River Blockade and other protest action.

Franklin Dams?

Why is the Society celebrating this conservationist anniversary?

The society today definitely would not be getting involved!

The society today is only (sadly) a native plant garden club

I'm not sure I get your point.

If you want to 'man the barricades' and mobilise against destruction of habitat, the Wilderness Society, Greenpeace and similar organisations are better able to do that than ASGAP.

But so what? That's what they do best.

The focus of the Society has *always* been the cultivation of Australian plants. That's the way it was when it started, that's the way it was in 1982 and that's the way it is now.

That's what we do best.

Does that mean we take no interest in conservation? Of course not. Many, if not most of our members are interested in the conservation of native flora - some are actively involved in bush regeneration, others in recording the distribution of native species and many are active in those 'pure' conservation organisations.

Where's the problem?

Cheers

Brian
