Favourites: Callistemon 'Injune'

8 March 2007 1:58 PM

I like this plant.

It's not outrageously spectacular but it has flushes of flowers several times a year and it's particularly useful now when there is little else in flower.

Callistemon 'Injune' is apparently an unnamed species or natural hybrid - its taxonomic status has yet to be determined. Apparently it occurs in a localised area near the town of Injune in central Queensland. It's a tall shrub to small tree with a weeping growth habit, usually up to 2-4 metres high. It has narrow lance-shaped leaves to about 7 cm in length. The pale pink bottlebrush-shaped flowers occur mainly in spring but, as mentioned, flushes at other times are not unusual.

A few years ago the old 'Gumnuts' email newsletter had a 'favourite plants' section where readers could tell others about their favourite Australian native plants.  It was a good idea then and I think it might also be interesting now.  If you have a plant or two that you particularly like and that might be useful for others, drop me an email.
