ART PHOTOGRAPHY Gerry Joe Weise was born in 1959 in Sydney, Australia. He made a name for himself in Europe in the 1980's & 1990's with his frequent installations at his exhibitions. While creating special chambers, room spaces, and floor installations; these installations led to the photography records he kept of each site. In keeping with those works, Gerry Joe Weise creates digital collage photos, manipulated by computers to enhance landscapes and nature, in his ever on-going "New-Nature" & "New-Realities" series.

NIGHTSCAPES
Great Tree 1, 2006
THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT 26 April 2006 by Gerry Joe Weise
From the dense and the dark passages found in nocturnal landscapes, one is in waiting. Waiting for the next consequence to happen. Hearing all silence, deafened by the vast spaces becoming claustrophobic, we shall not be the same again. Art has a very long history of evening, nightly, and after dusk works. Creating a mood and pleasure in representing obscurities, and awkward sentiments. These are precisely those moments I have learned to cherish from Prehistoric to Ancient to Modern to Contemporary Artwork. The "Nightscapes" theme I feel, has to have panoramic measurements, to create tension against claustophobia : a sort of resting against restlessness. Therfore the contradiction is exposed, and we can savor the delicate balance between a panorama wide-open and a small stuffy space. Air has definately color here ! The "Nightscapes" series use a combination of techniques I used for the "New-Nature" photographs and the "New-Realities" collages, and in doing so, hoping to create nocturnal moods unexploited in the color schemes I used beforehand.
RIVETING NIGHTSCAPES A Panorama Of Nightly Delights by Jan Rubin
A native of Sydney, Gerry Joe Weise moved to Europe in 1980, at the age of 20. In the late 80s, through his friendship with Jean-Marie LeSidaner (international French poet), he was invited to poet meetings, happenings, performances, and the Rimbaud Poetry Festival in France. His poetic "Nightscapes" taken from the "New-Nature / New-Realities", are a new private cosmos that opens up before us in a view, a panorama of nightly delights, under pressure from mortal life on a gravity-bound planet; but still offers an escape. Gerry Joe Weise is dedicated to close observation of nature and detail. He revisits themes such as mountains, plains, trees, water and skies. Weise scans photographic collages of landscape images and digitally manipulates them on his computer. These dark saturated color photos are riveting and breathtaking.

DIGITAL COLLAGES The Artist's Statement 26 April 2006 by Gerry Joe Weise
The Digital Collages from the "New-Realities" use a variety of techniques from "old-school" montage superimposing to "new-school" computer manipulation of the final image. Landscapes can be looked at from a 2 dimensional to a 3 dimensional view. The "New-Realities" theme is trying to obtain a 4th dimensional aspect, the "inner-soul" of the landscape. Some of the works can be looked at by tipping the image around to its side or by standing-it-up upside down. Other works can be looked at from a topographical view, as if the viewer was airborne. I have always respected collage artwork from Modern Art to Contemporary Art, and while creating these works has been a natural on-going process of great passion and desire, it seems I can finally express myself about nature as a whole. One must note that animals and humans do not appear within these landscapes : earth, water, air and vegetation, overwhelm any chance of an animal form making an appearance, and humans seem to be the intruders. Air has a way of being represented in different densities, different colors : yes air has color and form. Minerals give earth different flavors and odors, water creates division and distance, while vegetation creates time and space. It is impossible to escape nature walled up in a city, and do we have to drown out earthly sounds with our mechanics ? Utopia is for amateurs, the sublime is for the unfit, and to hell with political realism on this planet !

NATURE versus GRAVITY by Morton Fielding
The "New-Nature" series commenced with the introduction of dissonant forms of landscape photography in the South of France. The gradual deformations of images juxtaposed to form pictures no longer controlled by Earth's gravity, sometimes creating a central void, where the viewer is drawn into the image, sometimes turning the viewer upon his head. The exclusion of the human figure where all presence is evacuated, the viewer feels like an outsider in front of the image, as if nature has left mankind out; is a specific intention created by Gerry Joe Weise in what he calls the "New-Nature" series. The most significant characteristic of Weise's photography, is its anti-gravitational aspect, its overwhelming scale in thickness of vegetation, where as silence and cacophony simultaneously carve through the dense air. An instant of bafflement ? Gerry Joe Weise doesn't encourage the viewer to comprehend contemporary nature photography at first glance. Nature versus gravity !

GERRY JOE WEISE by Andrew Nuti ART LINE England
Gerry Joe Weise is interested in the dimension of life that surpasses traditional urban life. His more external approach juxtaposed with Space and Movement, is enticed by Energy and Creation, and more fundamentally, is guiding his artistic research through guidelines set up in response to them, rather than following 'trendy' patterns. Gerry Joe Weise has developed a whole body of theory, thanks to his musical practice, which evolves around the notion of rhythm. Here he has created a symbolic universe of his own.
