Gerry Joe Weise - Santa Maria Blues Festival - Azores Isles

GERRY JOE WEISE  has injected new energy into the Blues. His larger-than-life tones and outstanding solos add to a rich mix of blues rock arrangements. Songs that range from slow spacey textures / tears in your beer, to tone-to-the-bone blues, to outrageous rockin' tunes, to searing tortured blue bends.

Gerry Joe Weise plays both standard and infectious slide guitars. With a style steeped in blues, rock and country, this Sydney born guitarist has lived and toured extensively in Europe for more than 20 years. Since 1993, he has released several remarkable studio and live solo albums, that display a player of great skill and taste, with magnificent guitar tones and soaring melodies.

A French magazine claimed Gerry Joe Weise to be a "studio savvy, root's rocking guitarist extraordinaire", while a German paper announced that "Gerry Joe Weise's onstage persona sticks closely to the : do what it takes to amaze an audience". Throughout his many European tours, he has jammed with legends such as B.B.King, John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton, Albert Collins and Buddy Guy, among others. Gerry Joe Weise performed with his trio and later joined Noel Redding onstage for the 1996 30th Jimi Hendrix Commemorative Concert near Paris. Weise also opened for the Scorpions in front of 7,000 people in Toulouse France, playing Dobro as a solo-act in 1999.

21st Century Blues Rock executed with a twang-banger Stratocaster electric, a famous 1963 model, and a 1960 Sears Silvertone. The abuse and the raw power create a sonic landscape that spotlights the talents of Gerry Joe Weise. Singer and accomplished songwriter, he has written more than 80 tunes, some of which have had radio airplay. To sum things up, for the last 25 years, Gerry Joe Weise has performed amazing guitar at festivals and concerts around the world.

INTERVIEW  2006

Northern Territory Blues

MIKE ZOLTEN: After traveling around the World, so many tours after all these years since the late 1970's, which would be your favourite countries ?

GERRY JOE WEISE: I'd probably have to say France and Australia. Even though France has some political issues, it still is one of the leading forces in the Arts. I've done so many exhibitions, countless Blues tours in France, and I've made great friends and had so much great support; you just don't realize how lucky you are until you move to another country. For me France will always rest an institution to the 7 Arts.

Australia on the other hand is the last frontier, with great richness in the indigenous arts, that is so very dear to me. The wide open spaces where it is very easy to get to, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It's great to travel and tour, so many breathtaking landscapes to discover. But Australia has an isolated thriving musical culture, which doesn't export so well, that's why I've based myself in Europe during the 1980's and the 1990's. It's been so hard to make up my mind where to stay, since 1999 I have been living in Australia and in the South of France.

M Z: You are busy performing about 100 concerts a year ?

G J W: That's right, and I still find time to go to the studio and record new songs, and organize my exhibitions of installations, paintings and photography. I generally divide my time up 50/50 between art and music.

M Z: In the beginning of the early 2000's, you stayed at a couple of aboriginal communities ?

G J W: Yes one of them was a remote, population of 50 outstation, called Manmoyi; the other a much larger community named Gunbalanya, incorporating the Injalak Ats Council. Both belong to the Kunwinjku tribe, and are situated east of Kakadu Reserve in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. I had a great chance to have highly interesting musical exchanges, as well as learning from aboriginal artwork. I gained in knowledge, the real deal, and I feel a little less ignorant these days. Many thanks to the Kunwinjku people, for allowing me permission to enter their land.

M Z: What equipment are you using ?

G J W: Well basically it's my old trusty 1963 Strat and 1960 Silvertone. I made myself a white rectangle guitar and a purple left-handed guitar (note: Gerry has been servicing his own guitars since the 1970's - he has never put one of his guitars in a repair shop yet!), mostly for the extra open-slide tunings, like in A, G, E, D. I use Ibanez overdrive and distortion pedals; Carl Martin, Boss and Yamaha compressors, both vintage and new. The compressors are a pretty important part of my sound, they just seem to make everything else sound bigger.

M Z: And that's what makes Gerry Joe Weise so special, making the guitar sound bigger than life on his latest 2005 release "Sydney-Paris Blues".

SYDNEY - PARIS  BLUES

Australian guitarist, Gerry Joe Weise had been living in the south of France for 5 years before going back to Australia. The tracks on this album composed by bluesman Gerry Joe Weise have both fire and power, ignited by his 1963 L-series Stratocaster and 1960 Sears Silvertone. Showcasing "Slidewater Cajun" with his trio live in Paris, featuring cosmic slide-work. "Long Train Blues" a soaring electrifying experience, taken from a concert opening for the Yardbirds. "Crocodile River" where Texas meets Australia's Northern Territory; and tunes even more australian in style, like "Ned Kelly Outlaw" a solo deep and blue about bushrangers catching a fugitive. "Down In Sydney" a soulful acoustic solo performed live opening for the Scorpions in front of 7,000 people in southern France.

SYDNEY-PARIS BLUES

Staying with a big guitar sound is Gerry Joe Weise with his third CD "Sydney-Paris Blues". Australian guitarist living in the south of France, has put aside traditional australian instruments (didjeridu etc...) that had given his former "Bushman Boogie" album great color, to concentrate more on vocals and guitar. Fans who enjoy heroic guitar solos under control, will enjoy the treatment. Many great arrangements, plus an interesting contemporary approach to acoustic guitar.

At the Blues Festival this weekend, Gerry Joe Weise performed breathtaking guitar and vocals, with a great homage to Hound Dog Taylor. He's a legend in the making.

Gerry Joe Weise

Outrageous contemporary blues rock guitar, Gerry Joe Weise has many techniques up his sleeve : slide, fingerpicking, different open tunings, you name it - he can play it well! He is definitely a top-notch bluesman.

Another expat bluesman, this time from Sydney, is Gerry Joe Weise. Over the last 20 years he's played internationally with great musicians, such as John Lee Hooker and B.B.King. His guitar playing, which combines tight blues riffs with a lyrical edge, has great original quality.
