16/5/2008 - Alistair McGibbon...... Life on Civvy Street - and the General Public.
Alistair McGibbon - Ebay / Paypal's new Trust and Safety Officer - was formerly the head of the Australian Federal Police High Tech Crimes Unit.
Good.
But the trouble is that when your out of a position of "official power" whether honestly applied or not, that when it's YOU vs. the general public.... things then change.
I'll bet Ebay has said, "Oh lets recruit this guy, has knowledge and experience, has contacts and all... and we will cash him up big time to head hunt him into working for us.
BUT and it's a BIG BUT - and probably the wisdom of highsight and the lack of experience......
I would have researched Ebay - BIG TIME before accepting a grand cashed up offer to accept a contract from them.
Why?
Ebay and Paypal are shit hole companies.
It's like signing onto the Titanic, except that for this trip - the writing is actually on the wall.....
Further to this, when most of the reasonably experienced and net savvy consumers are saying "Fuck Ebay"....
Mc Gibbon appears in his first ever "Ebay PR campaign" on Today Tonight - and he defends and side steps the indefensible.
In plain people speak - he just bullshits his way through the whole thing by parroting the company spiel.
Lined up with the facts of Ebays dismal and plummeting performance, and the first hand experience of many many many consumers... that amounts to a total loss of consumer confidence in Ebay.
Technically, strategically and personally speaking - McGibbons parroting the party line, contrary to the facts - was an exceedingly bad move.
I perceive that we the general public have been "fucking lied too" big time, time after time by all sorts of terds.
For instance in Australia we have a phone company called Telstra - who when large tracts of humanity, are wanting to lynch them, over bad customer service, being given the run around and getting ripped off blind... they turn around and say "On no, according to our customer satisfaction surveys, 99.9% of all consumers are happy to have the price of their phone calls and line rentals double".
Yeah fucking sure.
Then you get politicians, the likes of the Australian Liberal Party..... starting the war against the people of Iraq... and then lying their way through everything to do with anything - as a matter of course, as well as this.... The legalised homocide of more than 2 millio people in Iraq - but it's not, because they wrote their own rule book to suit themselves.
Well all the people are well seasoned and quite sensitive to bare faced bullshit.... Especially the people who have been burnt badly by the likes of Ebay and Paypal.
And here is the TV report from Today Tonight, and here is McGibbon bullshitting his way through the whole thing.
Not one person who has ever been burnt by Ebays conduct believed a word this guy had to say.
And the reporting of an almost total majority or consumers who have used Ebay backed it up.
In a nutshell, on a global scale - in every country that Ebay operates out of, the general public are basically at "consumer war" with Ebay and Paypal - through both active opposition, and by running into the arms of the competition.
Consumers are NOT stupid and the seriously bad vibes have been building for a LONG time....
This is the sort of feedback being left on the forums about Ebays new Trust and Safety officer and what he had to say:
Gotta say... I agree he's the dodgiest looking tool I've ever seen... ooo yeh.. .we really trust ebay after seeing him - what sort of title is "Trust and Safety officer"... puleeese.
The only thing is - if Ebay goes belly up... what will happen to CW???

I'm a girl and you can call me Cassii
I'm over 13 but it doesn't mean I have to act it!
I felt they missed some really important points, like how you are FORCED to use paypal and how paypal is very expensive and offers you NO buyer protection.
I was really shocked to see that all you have to do is give a fake Aussie Post reference and the paypal investigation ends.
The eBay representative had no idea about the gist of the story, he had absolutely missed the point and validated the point with his own behaviour.
Sorry but that Trust and Safety guy Alistair McGibbon is a complete tool..
He looks so dodgy and really seems to have no idea what he is talking about!
Oh dear .. the ebay representative came across as an ignorant, lying snake oil salesman with little / no knowledge of the company. Might be time to replace him as he really made the story for Today Tonight.
Soooo true! At least the story was accurate this time. The drop in users/share prices/etc was an eye opener!
And he was STILL plugging paypal Silly twit!
I don't buy IT! This is a seatbelt that WON"T save your business as a seller.
What starts in one area grows to all in the end.
The United States sellers will scream their heads off. Those that are left.
We're BOYCOTTING big time from May 1st with no end in sight
I've moved to Online Auction. Nice folks who work WITH you.
You know the scary thing about shills like Alistair? They actually BELIEVE Ebay's bullshit corporate line. Paypal isn't any safer than any other method. It's a load.
The Paypal representative likens using Paypal to driving a car with a seatbelt and (therefore) not using Paypal to driving a car without a seatbelt?
After visiting paypalsucks.com it seems like eBay is removing the seatbelt and charging you for the privilege.
"These changed are designed to make it safer to buy and sell online..."
Alastair McGibbon is nothing more than a little money grubbing turd. He thinks everyone is bloody thick as pig shit. If the changes are there to make it safer than why don't you get rid of PayPal fees for eBay transactions or at least lower them. What an asshole. Everyone can bloody well see the amount of extra money eBay will get from this change that is 'solely for safety reasons'.
Up here in the United States eBay lowered their listings fees [only by 5 cents in some cases], but than INCREASED the Final Value Fee by 67% for the lowest level (up to US$25).
Everyone up here in the States is counting on you folks to voice your concerns to the ACCC and STOP eBay/PayPal from implementing these changes.
If eBay gets away with it down there, they will do it EVERYWHERE!!!! :-(
good work getting this uploaded so quickly, i missed the first half of the report. It's good that both sides of the conflict got a word in, now ACA needs to point out all the problems and fraud related to Paypal.
It seems like the general public has moved a motion of no confidence in Ebay Australia's new "Trust and Safety" officer.
I saw him on the Today Tonight TV show - live to air as well.
Ebay is fucked - and after seeing this, Naaaaaaa......
