CUPERTINO - Meg Whitman, Republican candidate for Governor, today announced the leaders of her public safety coalition, a group including several of the state's most respected law enforcement officials. The team will help Whitman develop her plan for strengthening California's public safety system, finding more effective ways to fight crime and keeping Californians safe.
"Public safety is government's first responsibility and must be its highest priority. We cannot truly enjoy freedom or prosper without the assurance that our families will be safe in their homes and their places of work and play,'' Whitman said. "Sacramento has lost touch with its obligation to Californians. Our public safety coalition is made up of local law enforcement professionals and we will work together to ensure convicted criminals serve their full sentences and our communities are safe."
Whitman's public safety coalition includes elected law enforcement officials from around the state. Whitman has been honored by the California District Attorneys Association for her leadership in helping to defeat Proposition 5, a misguided attempt away from zero tolerance and towards decriminalization of illegal drugs. Whitman, who co-chaired the opposition campaign, contributed $250,000 to defeat the November 2008 initiative.
Whitman is a strong supporter of the "Three Strikes and You're Out Law" and opposes any state and federal proposals to release criminals early. She backs swifter enforcement of the state's death penalty law. She believes in working with local law enforcement to develop effective crime prevention and rehabilitation programs that do not jeopardize public safety.
"Meg Whitman has an unwavering commitment to making public safety government's top priority," said Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully, a member of Whitman's coalition. "Meg will not buckle under budget or political pressures to accept deals that put Californians in danger. She believes that criminals should be held fully responsible for the crimes they commit and she will rigorously protect victims' rights and work with local law enforcement to keep Californians safe."
