Date functions in Excel

To automatically insert the current date in a worksheet, enter the following function in the required cell:

=TODAY()

Automatically format data based on value

To highlight important data based on value—like budget variances greater than $1,000 in bold red font—select the row or column containing the variances and go to Format > Conditional Formatting, and set the parameters and font style.

Automatically set column widths

To set column width so that it accommodates the longest set of numbers or text contained therein, click on the lettered column heading (like “C” for column C) and double click on the right border (the line between “C” and “D”).

Quickly print multiple spreadsheets at the same time

To print spreadsheets on multiple tabs, select the tabs by clicking on them while holding the Ctrl key—then print them by hitting Ctrl-P.

Rapidly view the information you need

Zoom in and out of a spreadsheet by holding the Ctrl key while rotating the wheel button on your mouse. You can zoom in on a specific formula, or zoom out to see your entire spreadsheet.

Automatically fill a list of numbers or dates

You can create a sequential series of numbers or dates based on a pattern that you establish. For example, enter “Monday” in cell A1, highlight cell A1 and drag the fill handle (the small black square in the lower-right corner of the active cell) to A7 to create a list of days in the week.

Changing the number of worksheets in a new workbook

  1. Click on Tools menu then select Options
  2. Click on the General tab of the dialog box
  3. Change the default number from 3 under 'Sheets in New Workbook' box
