It seems to me

I read a lot of words about conservatives and liberals. And I think that is what they are; just a lot of words to explain something that is really very simple, when it could all be summed up nicely in a few paragraphs.

We are humans on planet Earth. We share this planet for a few years with other life forms. Then we all die. Our planet is but one of billions in the Universe capable of sustaining life. One day it will die too.

So, the following conclusions can be drawn:

1. It is an arrogance to assume that the universe was created for the benefit of humans.

2. Our first obligation in this life is to survive.

3. We can choose whether to compete with other humans for survival, or to co-operate.

4. Conservatives believe that they are better equipped both physically and mentally to survive, and choose to compete.  That is why they favour war, both class war, and war against other nations. They also favour religion as a means of subjugating the masses. Much of their time is spent in convincing the masses that the conservatives' interests are the same as the masses they exploit. They are intolerant of those who question their right to do so. They have control of the mass media, and use it to promote their interests.

5. Liberals (small l) recognise that we are not all born physically or mentally equal, but do not accept that is a reason for rational humans to exploit fellow humans. They believe that our survival is best achieved through co-operation. That is why they do not favour war, either class war, or war against other nations, except as a means of last resort. They do not devote as much of their lives to the pursuit of material wealth as conservatives, and therefore have time to pursue more spiritually rewarding interests. This means that they are less likely to favour organised religion. They are more likely to be tolerant of diverse life styles. As they do not have control of the mass media, they are at a disadvantage in combating conservative propaganda.

6. So, we must choose whether we wish to be conservative or liberal, and live our lives accordingly.

That just about sums it up, I think.

Just one more thing; the Liberal Party in Australia is not a liberal party according to the description above, but a conservative one. Someone had a strange sense of humour when naming it.

I guess I must be a Liberal

Based on what you have just pointed out I must be a Liberal.

But what you are saying is nothing to do with the name given to various political parties - is that correct? Because based on Aussie politics, The Liberal party would be conservative in nature and The Labour party would be "liberal" in nature - a bit confusing. Is that right?

Also how do the US political parties fit into this definition? Bush would have to be a Conservative, right?

A slightly confused Chezza :P

I believe you're a small "l" liberal, Chezza, as distinct from a big "L" one.

You got it right Chezza. The Liberal Party is really a Conservative Party in this country. You'll often hear reference to small "l" liberals, who are the ones I am referring to, and the ones with whom I believe you and I identify.

Of course, all generalisations are dangerous, and many people would identify with liberals in some issues, and with conservatives in others. That is the middle ground that both political parties try to attract.

While both terms are used in politics, I prefer to think of them as a description of a basic philosophy of life, which is of course reflected in our political beliefs.

Some would argue that both U.S. political parties are conservative, but that Bush's Republican Party is the more conservative of the two. However, it is true that liberals in the U.S. would be more inclined to support the Democrats, albeit as the lesser of two evils.

I now see the distinction between small (l) and big (L) liberals.

Yes you are right about generalisations there are some issues that we will differ on, it makes voting for one party over another difficult at times.

As for the upcoming Victorian state election, well I have got no idea who to vote for. I am starting to wonder if it matters as even though the states are controlled by Labour governments the Liberal federal government seems to have everything tired up to suit them anyway.

Oh the apathy of it all. Ho Hum.

Have a great red wine night Snowy,
Chezza <:-)

I vote Labor, always have, always will.

Some people are just one eyed, rusted on, fanatical, zealots, I suppose....

Thanks for reminding me about it being red night. Actually it's beer and whisky, but hey, who's being picky....

small 'l' liberal. I've always wondered about that conservative/liberal talk. You've made it embarassingly easy to understand. Thanks Snowy.

I must admit a tad biased towards liberal, Catherine. ;o)

But that is how I see it. Glad I could help.

conservative

I'd say that "conservatives" are ironically named as well. The modern trend seems (to me) to be towards a "conservative" approach on a micro scale. By which I mean that more individuals are choosing the antagonistic approach over the co-operative one. This is seen in a lack of true community, and an increase in hostility in everyday life. Perhaps it's a short step from conservative to radical.

That seems closer to what neo-conservatives are about to me.

Radical conservatives seems to fit very well.
