Anxiety

It is now less than three weeks till I move back to Australia.  I feel like shower water that is slowly churning its way towards the drain and will eventually slurp down into the darkness of the plumbing.  Perhaps that is a tad dramatic, but after five years in China, going to Australia has placed a heavy weight on my shoulders.  The constant doom and gloom about the world’s economy hasn’t helped either, although it does serve as encouragement.  I definitely do not want to be in China if the shit hits the fan and people start getting pissed off about not being able to find jobs.  If the political climate goes bad, then we will see what the laowai moniker changes into.

No booze

No booze is probably not such a bad thing. It can help me get into tip-top shape.

Aus

I remember feeling the same thing before going to Aus from China (am originally a Brit) 6 years in China and I had definitely got a bit of Stockholm syndrome.

But... think of no pollution, clean drinking water, fresh vegetables grown organically, safe milk, easy traffic, safe driving (unless you are in a Sydney taxi driven by a mainlander), people not staring at you, things to do on the weekend other than shop, drink or blog, warm weather, beaches, walks in the bush, the sound of birds, friendly staff in shops who don't follow you around, never queueing in banks, decent television, the ability to hire a DVD that doesn't break down halfway through, no one answering their phone in the cinema, theatre, live music, live sports...

I could go on but you get my point. Adjusting is difficult but if you focus on the positives you soon realise that China is great but to live their long term is to deprive yourself of a lot.

Reverse culture shock

You are facing culture shock all over again ... this time in your home country.

All good things come to an end. Do you really wish to spend the rest of your life in China? There are advantages and disadvantages to each country. I agree that for the long term, a clean environment will do your body much good.
