16/11/2006 - Can't stand them!

Posted in entertainment

There has been a female monster popular in the internet world. Rather than "being popular",
I would like to say "being notorious". She is Furong Jiejie (Sister Lotus or whatever).  She has been posting her own photos in many online forums and she has started gaining "fame" through posting her photos on both Peking University's BBS and Tsinghua University's BBS.  Internet has provided a good and fast way for people like her to get known. Within a second, one million netizens may have known a person or an event. And to get known online costs little as well.

Anyway, Furong Jiejie has become so famous that many others follow her way. There is a mother and daughter from Shanghai. The mother, called "Chenxiang Jiejie" (Sisiter of Deep Fragrance) got interviewed by one of Beijing Television's long-standing program - "screen connects you and me". She didn't know what gracefulness meant to a 50 something woman. Neither did her daughter. Her daughter dressed herself up as the sister of Furong Jiejie. Amazingly, they both looked very ugly and disgusting in colorful clothes.

Recently, a girl posing herself as a descent of one of Tang Dynasty's greatest poets has started displaying her photos online as well. Her name is Guo Xue. By the way, she thinks her greatest talent is seduction. Yeah, you have got a free pussy. What a talent!

Can't they have a less ashameful way to present themselves?

Feeling inferior to others and unshamed of oneself is crucial to conduct such an action online. They can't get famous through hard and real work and intelligence. They have to act as clowns and please people to get KNOWN in a notorious way. In their eyes, being notorious is better than being unknown. Furong Jiejie even got an interview on a Shenyang TV show during the October holiday this year.

However, men are by no means immune to this action and way of thinking.

There is a senior student studying Enlgish at Beijing Foreign Language Studies University (Bei Wai). He has a online parade to show his naked photos with his penis blocked by his thighs or other stuff.  He also does dirty dance as well, spinning his waist and small bottom. His name is Liu Guang, also known as "Yao Fei Niang Niang" online (Sly and Horny Concubine). In an interview by a BTV reporter, he admitted that he is from a village or town in a farawary province and he felt inferior to those who come from big cities. Besides, despite being an English major, he hasn't passed Test for English Majors Level 4 ane now he is in the final year of university. He can't find a job with his poor acedemic scores. (Note: an English major here in China is required to pass TEM 4; otherwise, he can only get a diploma instead of a degree. By the way, I have passed both TEM 4 and TEM 8 and my TEM 4 score is A.) Therefore, he thought of this idea (or copied Furong Jiejie) to become famous. However, he didn't know that this would only cause disgust in people and he would put himself in a worse condition. His classmates and those who are studying in Bei Wai look down upon him even more. And this time, it is not because of his low "origin" but because he has lost his dignity and self-pride.

Disgusting things come in a pair. There is a popular show "Wo Xing Wo Xiu" (Show Yourself or something else, I can't remember its English name). Its headquarters are located in Shanghai. There is an amazing "blach horse" in the singing competition. Shi Yang comes from Gansu Province, one of the poorest provinces in China. He used his claptrap to please the judges and audience.  His singing is always out of tone. His dancing is only a piece of shit. He has good skin though I am not sure whether it is the power of makeup. Now he is popular in Shanghai and southern provinces. He is entitled "Funny King". People who barrack for him think him cute and brave enough to show his ridicule and weakness. People who feel disgusted at him think that he is by no means talented or professional - he is simply a clown full with claptrap. He always says in interviews that he want to become famous in order to become rich and buy his mum a big house.  The intention sounds nice and innocent. I would embrace him just for this. However, I can't allow myself to be disgusted and I still have sense and judgement.

I refuse to be pleased by ridiculous actions and those who produce them. The only kindness from me towards them and the like mentioned above is mercy because they have no talent and feel inferior to others and couldn't find any other way to present themselves well.

Yes, but they're not doing any harm, are they? If you don't like them, don't watch. But in this post, you come across as petty, judgemental, and mean. Why do they bother you so much? Maybe you should look inside yourself to get an answer to that question.

It's funny to me how innocent, humorous actions (Shi Yang) can ignite such criticism and spite. Sounds like someone is jealous. Are you not looking out for attention yourself by finding every 'fault' or 'quirk' in people? then why critisize others who want to do the same? At least Shi Yang follows his dream, however ridiculous or insignificant it might seem to others, instead of sitting infront of his computer looking for people who agree with him.

28/11/2006 - Wrong angle

I think you've taken the wrong angle with this post, therefore it has led people to misconstrue its meaning. Of course you're not jealous of the people mentioned in the post - after all, who wants to be the object of fun? What you should have done, however, is focus on the system that manufactures such monsters. Launching personal attacks are always dangerous because others can perceive them as insensitive and hurtful. Instead you should've launched an attack on the Chinese media, which is condescending, two-faced and lacking in conviction.

What we are seeing now is the cheapening of entertainment, a medium that is bereft of ideas. To be fair, this is a worldwide phenomenon, rather than one that's is centred only in China. Innovation is dying a cruel death, and in its place is a cavalcade of meaningless reality TV shows. Internet stars such as Fu Rong Jiejie are an extension of reality TV. Normal people are simply grist for the media machine, and a normal person's five minutes of fame translates into big money. No doubt, Fu Rong Jiejie is being sponsored by one of the major Chinese internet portals.

i agree on your view that Bei Wai's actions degrade his own personal dignity and honour......What are you tring to say though, are you trying to say that all people who have problems in academics become like bei wai...i do not think so,i think quite a few of them fight back and emerge successful in the careers they pursue.....and they can be very brilliant students who come from countrysides to pursue a better education in chinese universities...what about jerry yang(yahoo cofounder)...he went to america as an immigrant with vitually nothing to spare and emerged out as a graduate in stanford university in electrical engineering and went on to co-found yahoo.....A person should be respected based on his talent and virtues not based on whether he comes from a village or town or not based on his birth status......
