20/7/2006 - excuses or reasons?

Posted in office
My company is organizing a trip/training for this weekend. We are supposed to go to Beidaihe, a coastal city in Hebei Province, near Beijing. And only I and a newcomer who is a salesman, won't go there. He won't go there because his home is there. He comes from that area and my boss doesn't waste any money on him in case that he will leave the company soon. The reasons why I am not going there are 1. my house is under renovation and the kitchen cupboards will be installed this weekend, as well as a new stove. And I am the person who has the final say in any occassion at home. So I am needed to be there. 2. My finace is gonna be an interpreter for an Aussie so this weekend we are thinking of doing some practice at home. 3. This trip finally turns out to be a training for teamwork spirit. But foreign companies, as well as Hong Kong companies, have training for their staff during weekdays. Actually, training should be part of one's work. It ought to be held during weekdays instead of weekends. Weekends should be enjoyed with families, partners and friends, or by yourself. I don't wanna spend my whole week, seven days with my workmates, esp. those wanky senior staff.
I told the senior staff I can't go for the first two reasons. They gave me the consent that I can stay at home. Later, my Swiss workmate asked me whether I would go to Beidaihe alone or with my fiance. I said, neither of us would go for the above reasons. He reckoned those were pure excuses. But to me, they are fair dinkum reasons. I don't lie and I told him the true reasons.
So now the question is how to define a fact - an excuse or a reason? People, standing on different grounds, think of it ghastly different. I didn't argue with that Swiss since I got nothing wrong to hide and nothing more to say.
Surely, this is not about work. In our daily life, we are confronted with such things. And We can say that is a kind of misunderstanding. Communication fails, esp with wankers.

My question is: If your Swiss workmate thought you were making excuses, what does he think the real reason is?

I reckon he just thinks I don't wanna go and don't participate in corporate activities.
