28/6/2006 - Huang apologised

Posted in aussports
Huang has apologised to soccer fans. Zhang Bin, the host for CCTV 5 World Cup show, read Huang's apology aloud to soccer fans on the evening of  June 27th (Beijing time). This is the translation: "in the last minutes of the match between Australia and Italy, I put too much personal emotion into my commentary. When I woke up this morning and watched this match's replay, I felt that there were definitely improper errors and  inappropriation, which have led people to discomfort and hurt people's feelings. I deeply apologise to the audience!"
"I am very fond of the Italian team and I hoped Ithat Italy could make the final eight and that Italy could make the match more wonderful at last. However, I mixed my personal emotion with my professional commentary. My last few minutes' commentary was against a commentator's professionalism and they caused the audience's dissatisfaction, utterance and criticisms. I, once again, sincerely apologise to the audience!"
"In the future, I will learn from the past experience, instantly remind myself of my post and balance my sense and sensibility. We always hope that refs can be just and impartial; as a commentator, I will do my best to be so too. I will become a qualified CCTV commentator."
"I wish all soccer fans have a good time!"

I reckon he hasn't realised how big the mistake he has made. His apology doesn't sound sincere at all. And I reckon he should give a special apology to Aussie fans and the Australian team and the country.

28/6/2006 - And not a mention..

And Huang didn't mention *anything* about Australia's performance ( that the rest of the world seems to acknowledge) - only Italy's. And not a hint of apology to the Socceroos. So much for his being a renewed 'professional' reporter. You're right, his insincerity is obvious. The Asia cup will be interesting won't it? My only worry is that the socceroos as we see them now won't be the team that plays next year. I hope they don't make themselves 'unavailable'.

28/6/2006 - It's not easy saying sorry

It takes courage to publicly apologise. After all soccer is an emotional game and all he did was let his passion get the better of him. So I think he has shown that he is a decent man.

Don't forget that Huang didn't personally issue the apology - it was read out by another CCTV "personality". The apology was probably written by the CCTV PR manager, who is reacting to public opinion. It has been interesting to see the reaction of CCTV - they are very sensitive to public opinion even though they have monopolistic coverage.

29/6/2006 - I support Huang (from Italy)

Huang mentioned names like, Facchetti, Cabrini, Maldini... He knows what is talking about.
What did you expect to win the world Cup? Be humble accept the defeat with honour, you probably don’t realise but you did a good world cup, and you gave Italy hard time, but honestly you can not expect to defeat us. It is like Italy getting upset for loosing a rugby world cup game against Australia.

For many years you have associated football with second class Australian citizens (Italian, Greeks…), if I’m not wrong you have an expression for it (wogs?), the same with wine, olive oil, cappuccinos etcetera.

It will take you as long as it took Australia to understand diversity before you can seriously challenge Italian football.

29/6/2006 - Hello Salvatore

I'd be interested in what your comment would be if one your clumsy players hadn't tripped over and been awarded a dubious penalty. If in the ensuing extra time, Australia had been awarded a similar penalty and had scored a winning goal. No doubt there would have been riots in Italy as you hate to lose yes?
It is obvious that Huang knows Italian football players and has been an Italian team fan for a long time. However, it doesn't give him the right as a commentator to make derogatory remarks about another team, Australia or not.
Further, you appear to rather ignorant when it comes to Australia as well. We are fully conversant when it comes to good wine, good coffee and good Olive Oil. Perhaps you didn't know it, but Australia produces some of the best wine in the world. Our climate is well suited to growing a good wine grape, as well as good Olives, and dare I say it, good Coffee.
It appears we are also producing good football players. Why else would European teams be sourcing players from Australia? At the very least, our players do not fall over others and claim foul.
For the record, 'Wog' is term used to describe Greeks, not Italians Salvatore. 'Yank' is a term used to describe Americans. 'Pom' is term used to describe English people.
We Aussies (Australians being made up of many nationalities), tend in the main to have a pretty easy going attitude. We are made up of many, many nations and can be described as a cosmopolitan society. We are also very tolerant in the majority. Can you honestly say the same about Italy? Going by your comment, I doubt it.
Oh, we tend to remember Italy as the country that in World War 2 had tanks with 3 forward gears and six reverse.

29/6/2006 - It's not about Italy

Salvatore: This post is not talking about Australians being disappointed about losing to Italy. It's talking about rude commentary.

29/6/2006 - Hello to you Gryphonn?!

Dear Friend,

Australia his a beautiful country no doubts about, I accept the fact that I could be ignorant and I don’t want to degenerate this topic into second world war issues.

However here I’m communicating in this Blog in your language, maybe not as good as a native speaker but close enough to be understood. That is way I’m surprise of your chauvinistic and nationalistic comments. The reason way I have mentioned olive oil and wine is because a good old friend of mine, Italian-Australian, told me that his grandfather when he first put foot in WA, his wife was cooking garlic in olive oil and drinking wine, white Australians where very fascinated by it, they had no idea what that smell was.
It took some time before Australians understood and appreciate olive oil and wine. Now Australia produces olive oil, but like your football it tests young and unsophisticated, your wine is better and the best are the Margaret River and Barossa Valley regions, but can not compare with the “Monte Schiavo” the “Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi” the “Classico Riserva Le Giuncare” and I can go on for ever.

He also told me that during Second World War his grandfather was arrested just because he was Italian.

Now football again accept your defeat don’t crucify Hung for thinking differently and be happy mate
