What is Chemistry? - Posted at 5:58 AM on Mar. 10, 2009 by ausetute in website update
Until now, AUS-e-TUTE has not had a definition of chemistry and that has always been considered one of the most obvious omissions on the website, The reason for this omission is that it is really hard to define chemistry in a meaningful way to anyone that hasn't studied chemistry.

When I was a High School student, chemistry was defined on day 1 of the first chemistry class. The definition provided by my (excellent) Chemistry teacher was, "Chemistry is the study of matter".  My chemistry textbook added that it was the study of matter and its interactions. So, the first question that sprang to my mind was, "What is matter?", followed closely by, "What does interaction mean in this context?". Lesson two actually went on to discuss the nature of matter, but the meaning of interactions had to be inferred from ensuing lessons later in the course.

About 20 years later I entered my first chemistry class as a teacher. Defining chemistry had dropped off the High School Chemistry syllabus by then, but I asked the students what they thought chemistry was anyway, afterall, they had enrolled in the course, surely they would know what they were going to study. Alas, most of the students just looked blank, they had no idea what chemistry was, even though they had been meeting chemistry in at least one topic every previous year for four years. The few students that could answer provided the standard "chemistry is the study of matter" definition, but when questioned about what matter was, they only had a vague sense of what they were talking about.

Chemistry as the study of matter is a very dry definition. It doesn't give any indication of the immensity of the subject, nor of the myriad of ways that chemistry impacts on our daily lives. So, when we came to write our definition of chemistry we felt compelled to provide not just the standard definition, but to try to provide some sense of the enormous scope of the science of chemistry, and hopefully, to inspire a few more students to continue the study of chemistry in some form after they leave school.

Visit the "What is chemistry" page and read our definition then feel free to provide feedback.
