Beryllium Dimers - Posted at 8:34 AM on Dec. 14, 2009 by ausetute
Beryllium, symbol Be, is a strong, hard, toxic metal which occurs in nature in minerals such as emeralds and has industrial applications in electronics and nuclear weapons.

The beryllium dimer is composed of 2 beryllium atoms that were believed to repel each other based on an understanding of the chemistry until the 1960s when scientists discovered that the 2 atoms are actually attracted to each other and form a bond. Bond energies have now been calculated and agree with experimental results recorded for the vibrational energy of the bonding atoms for 11 levels.
