Aspidites Sandman Panel Van

Reptile Trader BURN OUT CAR

Wed 17th October 2007 was the first Whoop Ass Wednesday of the season to feature off-street drag racing and speedway practice.  This was also the first chance for many speedway drivers to get onto the Kwinana clay this season.  About 180 cars and bikes turned up to head down the drag strip, and the speedway pits were overflowing as well.  There were some awesome burnouts in the burn out comp.

Our own good mate Brett (Mags) showed them how it is done, Driving the Reptile Trader / Radical Reptiles Burn out car a Holden HZ Ute, Yes he done well and the crowd loved it as he smoked em up for about 3 mins before he overheated the old girl and blew the head gasket too really show off!!

The old girl will be out of action for about 2 - 3 weeks until be get her on the track again we intend on giving her a freshen up so she will be good for the season.

Holden HZ Panelvan (The Mongrel) Monster Burnout

Holden HZ Panelvan (The Mongrel) Monster Burnout

Another one for the Holden fans - This was Jamie's pics of a massive burnout he did in his Holden HZ panelvan at Perth Motorvation 2003.

HZ Burnout

When the pictures were taken, Jamie's pano had a small block 400 Chev motor with a standard bottom end, 307 Chev heads, a Victor E manifold and a Holley 750 Double Pumper. Ignition was by a HEI electric dizzy with a Crane Hi-6 system. Behind this motor was a Turbo 400 gearbox with a Salisbury diff.
The car was originally red, but was painted blue three weeks before the show.

Unfortunately Jamie dropped a valve on Motorvation weekend and put a hole through the block of his three year old motor, so now the van's out of action for a while.  Below are some nice video's to view.

Jamie has kept the running gear from the (The Mongrel) for his next project while Kenny from Reptile Trader Rockingham takes it on the for his new project. Hopefully Kenny will be able to get it turning treads and whiplash heads some time soon!

Update: Video!

  • Holdens, Burnouts and Videotape, Episode II (1.8MB)
  • Awesome Burnout (3.5MB)
  • Holdens, Burnouts and Videotape, Episode III (0.5MB)
  • Holdens, Burnouts and Videotape, Episode IV (0.5MB)

The video clips are pretty good, the old girl flicks around like it's on wet grass. Nice driving, Jamie. Oh, and how good does that Chev sound...

The Reptile Trader - Sandman Panel Van - Project Aspidites

    Kenny's New Project (Aspidites)

    March/April 2007

It all started over a couple of drinks one night at Reptile Trader Rockingham, a few of the boys and my self were all chatting about Reptiles, Drag Racing and the Burn Outs at the Kwinana Motorplex's snake pit in Naval Base a well known home to all the rev heads of W.A.  With the love of both Reptiles and Cars this how the Reptile Trader's new project was hatched.

    May 2007

The HZ 1978 Holden Sandman Panel Van was purchased off one of my mates Jamie, The cars previous name was The Mongrel a blue and green burn out machine with a lot of history (see above).

Now the owner of a good straight body HZ PV to work with, I must decide what I really want to do with this Van.  Do I want it to be a burn out, drag or show car ? Mmmm after some serious thought a decision is made, Good Bye The Mongrel, Hello Aspidites! The ultimate goal here is to revamp this old school car with new school interior, pick a nice base colour and splash escarpment murals with black headed pythons on one side and woma pythons on the other side, drop an original 308 back into it stroked to 355 off course, trick it up a bit and have it as an awesome show car.

    June 2007

It's time to get to work !!!!! It has now been fully stripped down and is in the work shop (some where in Cannington)  there it will be totaly sanded down, until I get it back shaped and undercoated, then a 308/355 motor will be put in (details to follow) and back to the panel shop for the final colour and air brushing.

    July 2007

Yet another purchase this time off my mate Brett (Mags) another HZ Ute this we will just keep as the black beauty for a burn out machine until it dies then we will put all the running gear in a HZ Sedan, hehehe. See new Blog.

    October 2007

OK,  It has been decided that two projects are on the go... The panel van will be the show car while the Ute will continue to be the Burn out car for now.

The van is now at its undercoat stage the new paint job is just around the corner, The final choice was a metallic burnt orange with gold flecks, Sal of Ariana Accident Repairs in Cannington 9356 6855,  has done an great job with restoring the old girls body and we are finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel...Should be up and running by  May 2008, fingers crossed!!

Here are the latest progressive pics of the van, the chassis and the inside of the van still has to sprayed black . Once done the motor goes in and back to the Panel shop for the final panels to go on, all the bolts holding on the gaurds are going to be stainless steel.

The motor is ready, 308/355 stroker kit with all the fruit....built by Derek Paulik of Paulik Engines 0421 750 285 a specialist in street and strip.

The Transmission is under construction a turbo 350 and a 9" LSD diff  it's almost ready this is being built by Phil in Mandurah, the running gear should be ready and installed by the end of November early December.

All the hard spare parts have been sourced by Paul at Rare Parts in Welshpool.

The interior will be done by Troy at Southside Trimmers in Rockingham scheduled for Febuary / March 2007, so as you can see there's still plenty to do.
