Wave After Wave

This painting was a last minute decision to enter the Gallipoli Memorial Club art prize. I had 10 days to research the details, complete the work and pack it for shipping to Sydney. It was tight!!! I wanted the strength of the image to dominate rather than photorealist detail so I opted for a looser style than my usual. I had no intention of writing prose when it came to the 100 word description of the piece but it just happened that way. At the time of writing this entry the piece has been selected as one of 23 finalists in the competition.

WAVE AFTER WAVE

Waves of men enlisting, waves of worried families waving goodbye to all.

Waves of troops training, waves of soldiers wading through the waves of a foreign shore.

Waves of mates waiting, waves of minds wondering how long before the call.

Waves of hearts pounding, waves of lines charging where waves have tried before.

Waves of dead scattered, waves of wounded crawling back towards the wall.

Waves of survivors with waves of nightmares returning to the loved ones they adore.

As no single drop of water makes a wave, no single soldier wins a war.

Edward Dyas

There's quite a significant difference between the work-in-progress version of the painting 'A Stream Runs Through It' and the completed painting but that's the nature of the piece...it just kept changing! A mere 9 months from concept to completion...don't want to rush these things. I'm pleased that it's finished and time to move on to other projects.

2, count them, 2 exhibitions started in November...I wasn't expecting the 2nd one but it was a success. I am now exclusively represented by the 'Thistle Gallery' in Ross, Tasmania and you may view my work there at www.thistlegallery.com .

I shall put together another blog to show work in progress for 2007. It's going to be a busy year so expect plenty of 'images' there!

oil over acrylic on board  3' x 4'           2006 current project

This is what a half finished painting looks like. All of the

base image has been done in wash acrylic. The back-

ground forest above the water line has already been done

over in oils. The remainder of the picture will have oils

added where necessary. ..some detailed and heavy, some

light washes. The combination of the acrylic and oil gives

a wonderful flat/gloss finish. This is my last official painting

for the exhibition and I hope it is done and sent in time!!!

panic

see Edward Dyas art anytime at: www.thistlegallery.com  www.thesnowgoosegallery.com

Depending on what transpires in the next 24 hours I should have a parcel of 7 works to send to the gallery. 6.9 of them are finished. 4 new images should be showing here thereafter. I probably don't need to remind you that these are all one-off originals and this little black duck has no desire to do copies! So, once they get to the gallery, are framed and the retail price is established they are available for sale. In other words if you are planning to visit the show opening you may find some of the pieces are already decorated with a red spot...this is not a blemish, it means it is sold. Could be disappointing if you've seen something here or on the gallery site from November 1st, earmarked it as 'yours' come Hell of high credit and then lob up to the opening or contact the gallery at that time (November 12th) only to be blubbering "but but but can't he do another one?" It's the standard bottom line for art...if you love it, don't hesitate. I know, I've kicked myself a few times for missing out on other artist's work which I wanted...and you can guarantee that the artist never did anything similar again and their prices didn't go down either. Consider yourselves warned.

day 4

see Edward Dyas art anytime at: www.thistlegallery.com  www.thesnowgoosegallery.com

Forget about the days, what happened to the week? I've named my desk 'ground zero'. I don't write 'dust me' on it anymore I just scrawl 'excavate me'. So close to getting 2 pieces finished today but the eyes gave out at the last minute. I especially like the pastel and carbon piece 'Feral Bouquet' because it truly illustrates how a single shaft of light in the forest can make the 'ordinary' quite magical. I'm only allowing myself another 10 days of pastel work otherwise I'll never get it to the gallery in time for them to frame it all. Mary and Doug at the Snow Goose Gallery are extraordinary 'bosses', an artist couldn't hope for more help or better friends!!! I just wish Mary would stop threatening to cut off her hands each time she sees my work...it's obviously rubbing off on their son David, (surely hand amputation can't be genetic?!) One day someone may chronicle all the emails between Mary and myself...it'll be a hit! At this point I'd like to thank those who have generously commented on the work shown here...I'm glad it is pleasing people.

Clouds fascinate me. 'Sky Train' is just part of a huge cloud formation that took up 180 degrees of the horizon one day...I hope to do the full picture eventually. Even if it is only for my own pleasure I will try to do a few more cloud pics for my solo but I'm sure there are other cloud fans out there who'd want one for their wall. Something about the Tasmanian light that makes clouds and sunsets/sunrises quite unusual...and a bitch to get the exact colours in art...but I do my best!

The beauty of larger pastel pictures for me is that I can work 'blind' on them...figuratively speaking! By 'blind' I mean that I can do most of the hack work without needing to focus too much, thereby saving the eyes a little. At the end I go into full focus and complete the detail in the picture. The eyes are deteriorating and I can't see clearly at any time without glasses now.

Mixing pastel with carbon is a challenge and requires 'fixing' the piece numerous times. And of course I have to focus on it throughout...but the result is...well, see for yourself on 'August Morning'.
