LPG Falcon - Fairmont

8:36 PM, 18/9/2006 .. Posted in LPG .. 1 comments .. Link
Ford Australia is the only Australian manufacturer with a dedicated LPG engine. Models available include Fairmont - Sedan, Falcon XT & Futura - Sedan/Wagon, Falcon XL/XLS/RTV  - Ute/Cab Chassis,  Falcon XL/XLS/RTV/XR6 - Ute/Styleside Box.

Ford recently held an around Australia LPG challenge. The 23-day journey covered almost 14,000 kilometres across mainland states in a dedicated LPG Falcon. The LPG Challenge returned to Melbourne on August 25 after spending only $997.55 on fuel by filling up solely on LPG.

Whats cool about that, is the fact that LPG is becoming more mainstream with availabilty not too much of a problem.

And $1000 for 14,000kms lets compare a Falcon and a Barina:
2006 Holden Barina 4 cylinder 1.6l
Fuel consumption: AS 2877 and ADR 81/01, combined (l/100km): 6.9
Math: 6.9l x 140 = 966. 966 x $1.20 = $1159.2

This Falcon sounds good!

Goverment LPG conversion Grant

6:05 PM, 18/9/2006 .. Posted in LPG .. 3 comments .. Link
The Australian Government has a grant available for people converting their vehicles to LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas).

It's called The LPG Vehicle Scheme and offers $2000 for an approved and fitted LPG conversion of a new or used motor vehicle for private use and $1000  for a factory-fitted LPG-dedicated vehicle for private use.

LPG is readily available through 3,200 service stations in Australia and the average LPG retail price is usually about half of the price of unleaded petrol. There are many workshops that specialise in LPG conversions and popular manufacturers of LPG conversion kits include Impco, Sprint Gas and GasResearch. LPG fitters are required to be licensed and undergo training in the fitment of LPG. Fitment or conversion can take from 1-2 days for a family car and a little longer for 4wds etc.

There is the option to have the vehicle be 'Duel Fuel' in which the vehicle can run on LPG and petrol or a straight gas conversion where the vehicle runs only on gas -LPG. Some say that a straight LPG conversion is better as the engine can be tuned specifically for that fuel although the downside is that if you run out of fuel you'll need to be towed to the servo to refuel.
