The big question. Should Australia look at Nuclear Power as on option for it's energy supply? As soon as you mention the word nuclear it instantly conjors up images of Hiroshima, Cold War, Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. For most people this brings up an instant rejection of the subject which could be a great shame if it's not one of the sciences considered to help solve the looming energy crisis' and meet emission targets. So what is Nuclear all about? Nuclear energy is produced naturally and man-made. Naturally: Some nuclear energy is produced naturally. For example, the Sun and other stars make heat and light by nuclear reactions. (Fussion) Man-Made: Nuclear energy can be man-made too. Nuclear reactors as parts of nuclear power plants generate electricity for many cities. (Fission - There is currently a lot of work going on to harness energy from Fussion ) Read more about Fission and Fussion http://www.energyquest.ca.gov/story/chapter13.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fusion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Fission Many countries have been successfully using Nuclear power for energy for some time including France, United Kingdom and Sweden, which if it floats your boat, have also massively reduced their emission levels and are ahead of their Kyoto targets (http://www.climateactionnetwork.ca/e/cop-12/kyoto-targets-dsf-2006.pdf). For a list of countries see: http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/inf01.htm How does a reactor work and generate electricity, how do you mine uranium, transport, bi products etc: http://www.world-nuclear.org/how/how.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power http://www.uic.com.au/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_reprocessing If reading is not your thing there are videos about nuclear energy: Four Corners - ABC - http://abc.net.au/4corners/special_eds/20050822/ There is also a couple of presentations made to Google Tech Talks on the subject: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9192869309993503810 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1996321846673788606 Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 8 of 26 } { Next Page } |
