Global Warming is it Just a Big Con?

Global Warming is certainly one of the hot topics in Australia at the moment particularly as we head to an election. This week for me has certainly been enlightening when I had to consider if was I just jumping on the populist bandwagon when it came to being a proponent for solving the global warming issue.

Science is a truly interesting thing  when we look at it's relationship with society and I don't think many will argue that we are in the age of science. Where it once took the back stage to religion it is now where we look for policy decisions and for answers. Is there anything wrong with that? Probably not although who do you believe when you have to believe what your told?

For most of us, including myself, we can make educated everyday decisions and from our own knowledge. But what happens when don't have knowledge about a subject. For example, you take your car to a mechanic and he says 'look, if you don't replace the timing belt, idler pulleys and and automatic tensioner it could break and cause thousands of dollars damage to your engine and leave you stranded'. If I have faith in this mechanic I'd probably say go ahead and fix that for me will you or if I wasn't sure I get could a second opinion but then who do I believe if they differ? If they both had a similar report I'd probably say 'ah well, must be right'. But what if all these mechanics are just colluding to secure a steady income out of preventative maintenance? In this case no, some vehicles do require this type of maintenance.

Now back to scientists, we have to believe what they say right? Should we? Especially when it comes to weather forecasting. Time to think critically, if they can't get the weather right for two days in advance why am I believing forecasts for 50 years in advance.........

Scientists, generally, rely on funding to practice their work. The bigger the problem, generally, the bigger the funding. So now I raise this question, is the whole Global Warming thing just a big fat con? Is it just a great tool of smoke and mirrors that can be used by scientists to gather funding so they can live their dream of discovery without outlaying a cent, or is it propaganda fueled by the anti-development green movement?  Are politicians like Al Gore and Kevin Rudd just using global warming to rise to popularity via the greatest swindle ever?

I know I'm asking lot's of questions, but more questions and critical thinking can lead to a closer version of the truth perhaps not so inconvenient. Global Warming is also todays great money maker - tell people your product is green and watch it sell - tell people you support green initiatives and watch your credibility soar, marketers including political marketers are taking it straight to the bank.

After a very long discussion, with someone far more educated than I, forward I went on a new path of discovery and following is some of what I came across which you can read and consider. Please feel free to come back and make a comment.

Re: Kevin Rudd's global warming swindle

I don't actually mind Kevin Rudd although I think you are spot on with saying that he is trying to ride the populist view on climate change to gain votes.

Unfortunately he misses the point of delivering a total picture of his views on climate change, the economy and our energy future. A lot of people totally misunderstand nuclear power which he opposes, people should do a little more research and not stupidly believe or make assumptions, and that's an easy thing to market yourself as being against to gain popularity. Just use the whole uneducated fear thing.

As energy reserves deplete and our energy requirements increase and looking forward 50 years nuclear energy is essential to Australia. Labor is full of hypocrisy on the issue of nuclear anyway, for them it's ok to mine it (uranium), ok to ship it to other countries and ok to set up the Northern Territory as a dumping ground for nuclear waste (notice Bob Hawke got totally silenced on that one!), but we cant use it as an energy source???

That global warming swindle video is very eye opening and enforces that fact that we should not swallow every fear and disaster story that we are fed!

Ive wondered about this whole climate change and all the spin that goes with it, great video. Considering the amount that we contribute to the greenhouse gases I think that Australia's potential energy and water crisis is a far greater concern. In the process of solving that will come more efficient energy production anyway and hopefully less dependency on foreign resources.

Kevin Rudd and his climate change spin

I think most sensible people are awake to the Kevin Rudd climate change spin. Using a yet to be completely scientifically proven set of theories and then using the fear of loss and destruction to market himself as the next leader is sign that he has no integrity.

Thanks for the feedback people, it's interesting to gauge some of the views out there.

Jules and Geoff, Rex edited your posts just to fix up some spelling and thanks for posting your thoughts.

Thanks for the links. I am leaning towards "overblown con" myself.

My thoughts on climate change is similar to the big con, yet i intend to go along with the positive side of global warming to reduce the toxins heavy metals that are spewed out from industry on the environment and people.
So global warming is absolutely genuine.

Kevin Rudd - Peter Garrett - Al Gore: Hypocrites Unite

Whilst I feel that 'global warming swindle' video may itself be a package of spin you do have an extremely valid point about Al Gore taking us all for a ride.

For those that don't remember he was the Vice President of the United States that made the big speech at the original Kyoto meeting only to return home to the US and toss in the trash can - so why is he now beating the drum? My guess is he just found an easy mule to ride to get fame and fortune - oh yeah he's taking this one to the bank.

On his tour of Australia in his private jet he's selling tickets to have lunch with for $25,000 that all the labor crew (federal and state) happily shelled out and went along to. And what did that get them, I nice little public vote of support for Labor's policy by the looks.

But hang on, what policy? Have you seen it? It hasn't been written yet or released to public anyway! So if the Australian public can't see the policy how does Al Gore know what it's about? And how could he possibly support it?

Australia seems to be the last country swallowing Al Gores garp, the Brits are little smarter. The BBC recently dropped a day long special featuring big Al after viewers said that they wanted intelligent programmes about climate change instead of lectures from hypocritical pop stars and celebrities. Via TimesOnline.co.uk

As reported in the LA Times - "[An Inconvenient Truth] Co-producer Lesley Chilcott used an online calculator to estimate that shooting the film used 41.4 tons of carbon dioxide and paid a middleman, a company called Native Energy, $12 a ton, or $496.80, to broker a deal to cut greenhouse gases elsewhere...

It was a ridiculously good deal with one problem: So far, it has not led to any additional emissions reductions."

So, whilst Peter Garret who once upon a time previously stood for something - now resolving to be nothing more than a sock puppet and Kevin Rudd, well that's easy to see, and now Al Gore - hypocrites unite - flying around the country in jets spewing out c02, spewing out spin and not a solution in sight!
