Bec & Dave

Bec was easily one of the best skippers Arafura had and she looked after her boat better than anyone. I don’t think other skippers knew where their First Aid box was, let alone maintained what was inside them. This young guitar-playing, beer drinking Kiwi was great fun and you never knew what was going to happen when you sat down for a drink with her. On our last Saturday night at Arafura the random topic of elastics was brought up, and Bec jumped up, ran off and came back with a brand spanking new set of pink and green elastics. The three of us soon broke them open and began playing in the bar, much to the confusion of the boys watching. Who would have thought to bring elastics to a Pearl Farm??? Random, but very fun! Then we have Dave, with his crooked teeth that hadn’t been brushed for a month, often squinting into to sun and a ciggie constantly hanging out his mouth, he was an unexpectedly hilarious guy who was genuinely good fun to work with. On a boat with Bec skippering he loved nothing more than to provoke her into an argument, but as a skipper himself he worked his crew hard. While chipping opposite me (Fi) he found himself doing all the talking, which usually entailed asking me if I liked this band or that band, and singing their songs at the top of his lungs, well out of tune. His favourites became ‘Barbie’ by Aqua (complete with Barbie and Ken voices) and later ‘Strong Enough’ by Cher.
