Two of my heroes met recently on the Colbert Report. The Colbert Report is a highly successful spin-off from the Daily Show, where Stephen plays a conservative blowhard character (seemingly modelled on an exaggerated Bill O'Reilly). Richard Dawkins made an appearance in support of his new book, "The God Delusion." As I've said many times, Richard Dawkins is my bloody hero and we drastically need more scientists like him. According to American figures, approximately 85% of scientists are atheists or agnostics, yet most of them pussy-foot around the issue in a show of misguided political correctness; not so Richard Dawkins, and bravo.

| Brilliant! I could definately see O'Reilly in there. A bit of Springer too...:)
Dawkins didn't seem to handle comedy that well, but I guess he's used to arguing with serious nutbags.

| I thought Dawkins did pretty well here, considering he carries a message which is extremely unpopular. | |||

| I hadn't considered that angle Beep, but it's a good point. It's an American show after all... | |||

| Ted,
Having seen quite a few of Colbert's other interviews, I was pretty surprised how well Dawkins went (if you'd like to see more, have a poke around on One Good Move). The problem with Colbert is that the SOB is often too damn good at playing his character, and doesn't give the other guy a chance to make any points. Dawkins though, managed to get in a couple of zingers: Colbert: "You say this book is intelligently designed..." Dawkins: "It is by the way." and "Who just did God then?" Nice. Beep, Good point; it was disheartening to hear the reactions of the audience, given that they'd be almost exclusively liberal, and are representing the sane end of the American political spectrum.

| I thought he did the right thing in the circumstances - play a straight bat.
Do you remember Club Buggery on the ABC? Whenever a guest came on who thought he'd try to milk a few cheap laughs, Roy and HG would cut him/her to pieces. Dawkins would have been silly to do anything other. Only the guests who left the lines to Roy and HG would leave with their dignity intact.

| Dikkii,
I hadn't thought of that; it's a similar situation, although Colbert is more making fun of himself than the guests (unless they deserve it of course). The best example was when he asked a Republican who supported the Ten Commandment displays on public property to name all ten. The dopey fuck couldn't even get to three. Just stunning: "Don't kill, don't lie... um." Retard. Beep, A good point once again. I probably should have thrown the world relatively in there somewhere, eh?
