A vain attempt at decrazification.

The Chaser takes the war to religion.Jun. 1, 2006

There's been some discussion on this site recently regarding Hillsong Church and the concept of tithing. I thought this video, from last week's Chaser's War on Everything, might shed more light on the matter (found this on God is for Suckers; news travels fast). The war was great last week; not only did they take on Hillsong Church with this hilarious song, but also had a crack at new age stupidity. They set up a stall at some market in an attempt to find out just how obvious a bullshit artist you have to be before people will show some skepticism. They named their products gullible snake oil, candles made from pure bull, bollocks balls etc. The sales pitch included all the usual bullshit from woo pushers; positive energy, ancient wisdom, chakras, magical properties, science can’t explain… blah blah blah. Sadly, people still fell for it. Man, people are idiots. The real problem is ignorance; if people don't know anything, they'll be taken in by anything. Our education system is woefully inadequate; it should be completely and utterly impossible for someone to come out of secondary education and still be taken in by astrology (for example). Depressingly, this is not the case.

Ah, the memories... You know, I used to lead the band in that little church I was in. I should've stayed. I'd be making millions by now...:(

On a more serious note, I found this - http://www.truthorfables.com/Tithing.htm - about tithing. It's a pitty you don't hear this stuff in church. I'm surprised the AOG, Hillsong or any other brand (that's exactly what they are after all) of church teaches you to read ALL of the bible and try and understand it. I guess they rely on the fact that some people prefer to be told than to do the reading and research themselves. Whatever they rely on though, it seems to work.

What was it L. Ron Hubbard said? If you want to make REAL money, own your own religion. He was right about that, if a little misguided about some other things...:-)

Hi Plonka,

"I should've stayed. I'd be making millions by now..."

It's absurdly easy to rake in the cash by taking advantage of the ignorance, gullibility, and stupidity of others. These churches are an excellent example. Also, you could become a Feng Shui expert, psychic, homeotherapist, acupuncturist, medium, astrologer... the list is endless. Of course, having a conscience might get in the way.

Thanks for the link. I especially enjoyed this part:

"Currency such as silver, gold, talents and shekels was not allowed to pay tithe. [Snip] So when your church Pastor asks you to pay tithe, I guess you will have drop a lot of sheep or cows, fruit or grain, in the offering plate at church to keep the tithe law."

Now that would make an excellent comedy sketch. Maybe the Chaser could try showing up at Hillsong with a herd of sheep. "Got our tithe here. Herd of tithe coming through. Make way."

"I'm surprised the AOG... teaches you to read ALL of the bible and try and understand it."

The Babble is a very difficult read, what with all the archaic language. I'd be very surprised if even 1% of Christians have read the whole thing. Also, I'm sure these churches provide you with reading material so you don't pay too much attention to what the Bible actually says, but rather interpret the Bible CORRECTLY.

That Hubbard quote is somewhat disturbing. It makes you think that maybe he was a clever bastard making a point, rather than a complete fucking loony. Maybe he was both. Although, before he died, he forgot to say: "Hey morons, I just made all this crazy shit up as a money making scam. Joke's on you."

"a little misguided about some other things"

My friend, you win the award for biggest understatement by a human being in the entire history of the universe. Hubbard was batshit insane cubed.

Adam,

The story goes that Dianetics was actually started because after he said that, someone bet him he couldn't do it and get away with it.

Hey Plonka,

I think you may be giving Hubbard too much credit. From what I've read about Hubbard, his theories (detailed in Dianetics) were rejected by the psychiatrists of the time, so he declared war on the entire profession. An extensive resource on Hubbard and Scientology can be found at www.xenu.net
