In his Good Friday (being nailed to a stick was a good day?) address,
Pope Benedict had a word or two to say about science. You’ve probably heard
some of these words before: satanic, sinful, evil, filth, blah…blah…blah. Of course, he wasn’t referring to all of science, just the bits he and
his invisible mate disapprove of, such as genetics and stem cell research. From
an article in The Times (UK): “Particular condemnation is reserved for scientific
advances in the field of genetic manipulation. Warning against the move to
“modify the very grammar of life as planned and willed by God”, the Pope will
lead prayers against “insane, risky and dangerous” ventures in attempting “to
take God’s place without being God”.” “Modify the very grammar of life as planned and willed
by God?” Got any evidence for that
claim pal? Nah, didn’t think so. We have LOTS for evolution though. Oh…sorry, I
forgot you don’t care about evidence. “‘Insane, risky and dangerous’ ventures…” You hear voices from an
invisible magic dude in the sky and you’re lecturing scientists on sanity? An
entire army of pots and kettles are calling each other black, and laughing
their asses off. “To take God’s place without being God.” I especially like the whole
‘playing God’ argument. Wouldn’t it be horrible if the scientists figured out
how to cure all those nasty diseases? It would be nice if someone was playing
God…like maybe, God. Why don’t you help us out magic dude? Oh, you don’t exist
– sorry. Since you don’t exist, is it okay if we try to help ourselves out?
Cool, thanks. The Pope also asked: “Where is Jesus in the agony of our own
time, in the division of our world into belts of prosperity and belts of
poverty?” Yeah, where the hell is that
guy? Didn’t he say he’d be coming back? Oh, that’s right – he told his mates in
the Bible he’d be back in their lifetimes; guess he’s not coming then. How
disappointing, I love a good magic trick as much as the next guy. This Pope might even be worse than the last one. At least JP recognized the validity of evolution. How long before this guy rescinds those statements and publicly backs intelligent design? Get your bets in the pool people.

| I liked your discussion of the "Playing God" argument.
How come no one ever accuses God of playing a scientist? Plenty of His messengers appear willing to do just that.

| Yeah, how dare God play at being a scientist. By the look of it, he's not very good at it; a pseudoscientist at best.
It reminds me of all those Americans who say to atheists who are trying to uphold the seperation of church and state: "The US is a Christian country. Why don't you go live in a Godless country?" The obvious answer being: "Oh man, if only we could. On the other hand, why don't you ignorant morons go and live in a country without science?" I'd be willing to bet they'd change their tune pretty damn quick.

| Thanks Beep Beep,
You reminded me I had to put up my own roll. Finally got around to figuring out some HTML and putting one up. I'll have to work out how to get it from floating about the place later.
