St. Marks Surprise!

Posted on 11/8/2008 at 7:21 AM - Post Comment

Went to St. Marks last Friday looking for a Great White Heron that is supposed to be spending time here.  Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets are very common here, but a Great White Heron is a rare sighting and I was really hoping to get a shot (photo) of him!  Unfortunately, I didn't get out there until the heat of the day had taken hold and there weren't many birds around at all, but as I was driving along, some movement caught my eye.  I couldn't get a shot from where I was, so I drove the car up the road a little ways, parked, and walked to a spot where I hoped I'd be able to get shot!

~~

I know we have wild boar all over place up here, but I have never seen one up close.  All I have ever seen was dark bodies running through the trees, so it was a real treat to be able to see these up close!  I wasn't sure how many there were and hoped if I stayed still and quiet, they would continue to come toward me!

~~

As I continued to watch them, I noticed something light brown in the weeds...

 ~~~
When they finally come into view, I was surprised to see that not only was one of the piggies light brown...
~~
....but there were a total of 6 of them!
~~
They didn't seem to notice me and kept coming closer!
~~~

They were like little vacuum cleaners sweeping across the mud!

~~

Dig in one spot...

~~

...then move to another!

~~

I really enjoyed watching them and was happy they came close enough for some decent shots!

~~~
These had to be young ones because they really weren't very big.  I didn't see any larger ones, so who knows where mom and dad were!
~~
They finally moved on and I just had to laugh at the cute little tails!
~~
There were only a couple of other things I pointed the camera at.  One was these beautiful Black-necked Stilts.
~~~

And the other was this beautiful Osprey eating his lunch!

Wild Boar what a surprise! You were very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. Nice sharp photos of that gorgeous Osprey.
