2007513 - Lionel Newman - Exciting Hong Kong

Here's an interesting album. This is my only example of Newman's work but a quick look up on IMDB reveals that he was involved in hundreds of movies as a composer and musical supervisor including Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. He won one oscar and was nominated 11 times.

A very prolific and talented man he was honored with the gold statuette for his scoring of 1969's Hello Dolly. His last screen assignment was 1984's Unfaithfully Yours, a remake of one of the few Fox films of the 1940s that he didn't work on. Lionel Newman was the brother of composer Alfred Newman and the uncle of musician Randy Newman.

Exciting Hong Kong

Following his success with the Adventures in Paradise series, 20th Century Fox musical director Lionel Newman supplied the music for Hong Kong. Both series were on ABC-TV and feature top music. Hong Kong features these additional arrangers: Billy May, whose "Honorable Hong Kong Rock" is covered; Earle Hagen, whose I Spy is well known; Frank Comstock, famous for a landmark space album; Marty Paich; Herb Spencer; and Warren Baker. (Since it is spelled "Baker" twice, it can be assumed that it is not Warren Barker, the musical director and exotica arranger for Warner Bros.) The music is comparable to Axel Stordahl's exotica, in which dramatic orchestra music gets a somewhat quirky, exotic makeover. "Honorable Hong Kong Rock" is the standout; May repeats the arrangement from his and Charlie Barnet's album (as the Out-Islanders) titled Polynesian Fantasy. "Chinese Cha Cha" reprises it. ~ Tony Wilds, All Music Guide

Fantastic blog. I've seen so many exotica/lounge albuns in old book stores and antiques fairs and never had the courage to buy them. The next Three Suns' album I ran onto, I'll get it. I've seen so many 10 inches released by them.Well, bye for today.
Tchau.
Greetings from Brazil.
