Possessions and accomplishments may bring a sense of success. 
These may offer a distraction from pain but will not create a real sense of self worth or self-esteem. 
Why do so many successful people live lives of pain and shame?  
Self-esteem and self worth are built upon identity. 
Identity will fill the empty void left by success.
