Small Business Websites

Tutorial Notes 13

Under the caption “Future Trends” discuss three small business online future trends from your perspective.

SECURITY

In the anonymous world of the web, customers and web merchants must deal with a new array of faceless dangers which pose the threat of fraud, service disruption, lost sales, theft of confidential information, and most damaging of all, loss of your customers' trust.

There is no doubt that while the use of internet for e-business is growing quickly, many customers and some businesses have concerns that constrain their use of the internet for conducting transactions.
For many firms and their customers, the major fear is of an unauthorized person having access to personal or confidential information through hacking (illegal gaining of access to a computer). It is certainly true that transactions over the internet can be intercepted and read, all though many suppliers of security software claim that they can provide extremely high levels of protection

Encryption

Encryption is the translation of data into a secret code. Encryption is the most effective way to achieve data security. To read an encrypted file, you must have access to a secret key or password that enables you to decrypt it.

Firewall

A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.

SHOPPING CARTS

Online shopping carts are becoming key features which are found on many of today’s websites. Shopping carts if implemented properly can be very beneficial for a company that has a shopping cart on their website.

Shopping carts can be easily implemented through the use of shopping cart software. They can be easy to maintain however will require particular updates such as updates relating to product changes.

Some of the essentials which might be required for a shopping cart to function properly are database linkage, product catalogues and a payment system will need to be integrated.

MOBILE COMPUTING

Mobile computing involves being able to use a computing device even when you are mobile, in a different location away from a computer (http://mobileman.projects.supsi.ch/glossary.html). It is becoming quite common amongst the IT and business industries.

With mobile computing the computing device is not always connected to the central network. Two common examples of mobile devices are laptop computers and mobile phones. These devices may communicate with a base location with or without a wireless connection

  1. A future trends will be buying online more people will be buying online because the software will gradually progress to make buying online safer and people will no longer need to go shopping when every things is online it will make it easier for the customer to use. There will much higher security in the future and it will gradually expand, in years to come the online shopping business will take over the stores.
  2. Another future trend that we will see is much more of the larger business taking over the small business companies. As many small businesses these days are sold online the larger business are gradually taking them. Example Safeway is a prime example they have taken over Tandy, dicksmiths and BWS these many more.
  3. Shopping carts will become more popular in future trends; they are easy to main and will gradually become better. The only negative aspect in a shopping cart is you have to regularly update the page. Web sites who have shopping carts on the site will find there site more beneficial and in the future neally every site which is buying or selling products will have one of these on their site.

Mobile commerce

Mobile commerce or m-commerce involves mobile phones, PDA’s and other technologies using the internet to communicate and transact via a high speed connection. The popularity of SMS and the introduction of 3G network technologies will make the world of m-commerce coming even clearer. People will be able to pay for goods and services through the use of there mobiles such as paying for a coke at a can machine with your mobile or PDA, this is done by the phone communicating with the machine and swapping details similar to them of using a bankcard.

Online Payment Systems

Allowing users to make payments online is a feature which is seen more frequently on today's websites. Many may question the security and reliability of such payment systems however most have proven to be quite successful. Payment systems can benefit users of a site as it allows them to shop and make payments in their own time no matter were they are. Although such payment systems can benefit users of a site one disadvantage which many are aware of is the fact that personal information can be received by the wrong people such as credit card numbers.

It is important that when businesses are selecting a payment system to integrate on their site they look at issues such as security of the system and reliability of the company offering their services.

Websites

Many businesses are transforming from being a “traditional business” to becoming an “e-business”. Businesses are provided with a number of opportunities if they decide to take their business activities online.

The web can be used by businesses as an influential, fast and efficient marketing and communication tool, businesses are able to create a global presence and a simple website can be easy to create and implement.

Users are able to access a particular website from any location. Profits and sales can also increase for businesses that sell their products/services online.

Week 13

Under the caption “Future Trends” discuss three small business online future trends from your perspective.

Develop 2-3 paragraphs for each trend, using your own words.

Mobile Commerce:

Mobile Commerce is about the applications and services that are available or accessible via mobile devices. Such technologies and services that allow users to access the internet for services is 3G. Examples of applications and services available via a mobile device are games, music, news, cable television, e-zines, etc.

E-Security:

E-Security is a big part in the e-business / e-commerce world. This is because of the online transactions, and the transfer of confidential personal and business data between the business and the consumers. Data must always be kept secure as it is always a security issue and can put both parties at risk. There are many e-security technologies such as SSL, which is a secure socket layer. SSL is an application layer protocol created for managing the security of message transmissions in a network. SSL uses the public-and-private key encryption system from RSA, which also includes the use of a digital certificate. SSL can be intergraded into an e-business as it enables client and server applications to communicate in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery

E-Cash:

E-Cash is the new currency of the global electronic economy. It acts as an electronic "wallet" of the future. It’s a smart wireless media appliance, transaction portal, personal computer, and communication device. An example of an e-wallet is PayPal. PayPal enables any individual or business to securely, easily and quickly send and receive payments online. The service is built on existing financial infrastructure of bank accounts and credit cards and utilizes the world's most advanced proprietary fraud prevention systems to create a safe, global, real-time payment solution.
