Emotional appeal is more effective in B2C because B2C consumers usually are not professors and need more appeal design to attract them to purchase products. 8.                  Give examples of content friendly applications

n     FrontPage

n     Dreamweaver

n     Sausage Software

9.                  Discuss the limitations of these applications web-development-wise.

The limitations of these applications could be that they are usually good for the users who just edit or add the static content. If they are intend to integrate with more advanced applications (e.g. interactive with the database), it may not work functionally.

10.               What are the key differences between primary, secondary and supporting content?

Primary Content:

n     instrumental in keeping the website up-and-running

n     key sections of the website

n     requires regular updates

Secondary Content:

n     FAQ

n     static information

n     policies

Supporting Content:

n     business process information

n     logos etc.

n     links can be classified as partially content-focused

11.               Why it is so difficult to classify links is either informational content or functionality?

It's quite difficult to classify links as informational content or functionality when the users see a link. Because the linked buttons have almost the same looking, they could link to another informational content page or functionality. So the users have no idea where to go until they click the link.

Exercise

Identify and locate three small-business websites and make your own observations about their content and functionality. Provide sufficient information for a reader to quickly comprehend the nature of the business and what services/products it is offering - the URL is a must.

For preference, select Australian-based businesses.

Review the observations of others and comment appropriately on their blogs.

Tutorial Questions 830/8/2006

1. What is informational content?

Informational content is content which describes or provides a description about different sort of information.

2. Can you regard a shopping cart as an element of informational content?

A shopping cart can perhaps be an element of informational content, as it provides a brief description of a product, as well as it’s price and the quantity the customer wants to order.

3. Give examples of different facets of informational content.

- Marketing function

- Information relating to a product, such as price & description

- Content which describes a hyperlink

- Content describing an issue/topic

- Site navigation

4. What does the term “integrated content” mean? Discuss.

Integrated content involves combining different types of content to help present the content better. Sometimes integrating different types of content will and won’t work. Examples of content integration include text wraps & process descriptions. They must reflect the website in a consistent manner.

5. What would you regard as ‘appropriate” language to use on a B2C website? Discuss.

An appropriate language for B2C would be providing information which is simple, precise and clear to the point without confusing consumers. It’s best to avoid technical terms if possible and any words which are ambiguous. The content provided should be easy to understand & read, and should be error free.

6. Should the language differ for a B2B Website?

Only some aspects of the language should differ. Technical terms might need to be included in order to improve the customer’s knowledge about the product/service, as well as making the information about the product more accurate & concise. The content provided should still be error free.

7. What is a “Text Wrap”?

A text wrap is where text is wrapped/aligned around images on a page layout

8. What is the relationship between informational content and website map?

The relationship is that the informational content describes the different parts of the website map. The informational content helps the user understand why certain parts of the website are linked to each other and others aren’t. If there is no informational content on a website map, the website map would just about be useless, and it would be very hard for users to understand.

9. What is the difference between static content and dynamic content?

Dynamic content is where content is regularly changed and updated in order to keep the content accurate and correct. Examples of dynamic content include the stock market and products of an online store. Static content is content which doesn’t require change and is only put on the website without the intention of ever changing it. For example a fitness workout or learning a tennis shot.

10. What are the most essential elements of informational content for commercial websites? Discuss.

Perhaps the most essential element for informational content is accuracy. If the information/content in a commercial website isn’t up-to-date and accurate, consumers & users will be miss lead. Also by not having accurate content, the website is publishing false and incorrect content which could have precautions such as legal issues.

11. What is content customization? Give Examples.

Customised content allows users & customers to choose the content they want to read and see. It gives customers & users choice and self-censorship, allowing them to manage what content they see. One example of content customisation include choosing a type of news story, such as sport, finance or international news. Another example includes selecting a type of product u may want to buy online, such as selecting shoes, pants or maybe a shirt.

12. Why is self-censorship important? Who is legally liable for materials published online?

Self-censorship is important because it reduces the risk of the person breaking a law/rule and perhaps offending other religions or countries, in which the government would have to intervene and perhaps impose a penalty on the individual. The organisation/person who posts/publishes the content online is legally liable. This is because they are responsible for what they have written or published, and that content becomes their liability.

13. Give examples of “sensitive” content.

Examples of sensitive content include drugs, alcohol, terrorism & violence, adult material and race/religion issues.

14. What are the contemporary copyright issues for websites? Explain.

Contemporary copyright issues would mainly regard content and images. If a website or a person needs an image, and they copy that image from another website which has copyrighted the image, then this is a breach of law. This type of scenario also occurs with information & content.

15. What are the key principles for content authoring?

Content authoring is needed by businesses to make the content on their website as accurate and as best suited to their audience as possible. Key principles for content authoring include that the service is usually outsourced to a third-party and is carried out by Public Relations professionals because of its importance.

Tutorial Questions 5

1.                      What types of data are regarded as high risk/security?

Payments, database, third-party data.

2.                      What is third-party data? Define and explain.

Third-party data is data which contains information and details about an external person or organisation. Details for the data could include names, age and address.

3.                      What is a Security Zone? Give an example.

A security zone has many different levels, and they change according to the level of risk a user is in danger to whilst on the internet. Example, if a user enters a site that could possibly inject harmful viruses, the security zone will be at its highest to prevent it from happening.

4.                      How do security settings differ depending on the type of the application used?

Security settings differentiate the difference between a possibly harmful application to a high risking one. For example, One could use an application like Kazaa or LimeWire to download programs using a p2p network, without knowing they are in extremely high risk of downloading a virus or Trojan. That is considered a program that is high risk to a security program compared to Microsoft word applications.

5.                      Can you have security zones on the Internet?

Yes it is possible. Internet explorer itself has a security rating that can be changed while the user is surfing through the web.

6.                      What are the key differences between the Intranet and Extranet security zones?

Intranet security zones are much easier to maintain and trust, users are within the networked users and are not likely to spread viruses around the network as it would affect themselves also. Whereas in Extranet, users outside of the company network barriers are able to spread harmful applications.

7.                      What are the main security issues associated with the use of e-mail?

Attachments to emails are the highest risked type of emails concluded. An attachment could cripple your computer and the network in a matter of minutes. Users have been warned by major corporate companies to be sure that the email you are downloading the attached file from are from email addresses that you know.

8.                      What are the different strategies for e-mail filtering?

You can use Junk mail filters, have priority levels and attachment warnings to prevent yourself from unwanted applications.

9.                      What would you use as a basis for assigning priority levels? Discuss.

A basis for assigning priority levels would be determined by the sort of site or file you are about to view or download. For example, if you are about to view a government site .gov.au there would be minimal risk in having your computer infected however if you decided to view a site with a insecure html address or an address that you are unfamiliar with such as .altavista.kr or something awkward, its advised that you should consider changing your priority levels.

10.                 Are there any networks that are particularly difficult to secure? Discuss.

Obviously the most insecure network would be a WAN or World wide web. The internet allows data transferring through open ports. Due the sheer amount of people using the internet, the greater the risk of a virus infection to spread. Value Added Networks (VAN’s) are also difficult to secure because this network is also open to outside an organisation. To limit the risks, steps such as limiting the sharing of data and limiting access could help prevent these risks.

11.                 Give examples of High, Low and Medium security levels for files.

High level security files would be confidential files that could contain valuable company information to personal information. Medium level security file could be files that can be exchanged to be viewed around be a small circle of people that would deem it important, otherwise useless to a majority. Low level security file would be something from an icon, emblem to a .jpg image that can be easily viewed and shared around the internet.

12.                 What is Outbound Data Storage? Explain

Outbound data storage involved storing data using third-party companies and resources. Types of data stored include payment and transactions detail. Mobile storage devices are also used.

13.                 What are the specific issues associated with managing e-wallets?

E-wallets can be damaging when the user account is shared. All companies will notify the user not to share e-wallet accounts to any other person even if trusted. It stores high security personal information about the user.

14.                 What are the hazards associated with exporting/importing of the files?

When exporting or importing internet files, the data travels through the internet through a port. Risks arise when an unauthorized user uses the port to retrieve the file and it’s possible for the user to send files too such as viruses and Trojan.

15.                 What is the role of a security policy in combating security threats?

Security policy details what steps and processes the organisation takes to help reduce the risk of a breach in security. Security policies also identify processes and ways that computer users can take to help reduce the risk even more.

16.                 What are some of the strategies for limiting access to computer use?

Some strategies include using login/password authorization before the user can access the site.

17.                 In what way will the “fully identifiable” messages increase the security?

Fully identifiable messages very the user of the computer and the organisation they are working for. The user should know what the messages mean and entail because they should be working for the organisation to be able to read these messages.

18.                 What are the security issues for communicating via mobile devices?

Mobile devices have limited security because mobile technology is new and it mostly runs on the wireless networks. Wireless is a new and vastly improving technology however due to the lack in security many people have not yet adapted to the technology yet.
