Protests by Chinese workers, manufacturing the garish plastic toys McDonald’s uses to lure children through its golden arches, descended into a riot in September.

China Labor Watch reports that 1,000 of the 10,000 workers who live and work in the Hong Kong factory took part. Many were injured and dozens arrested.

The protestors, who also make toys for Disney, Mattel and Warner, claimed to be suffering under terrible working conditions. ‘Chinese workers live at the bottom of society,’ commented Li Qiang, China Labor Watch Director. ‘They have no means to voice their needs or to protect their lawful rights.

Workers will only stand up and fight when their situation is so miserable that they do not have any other options... McDonald’s and Mattel have not lived up to their social responsibilities as large corporations, and have not respected their own codes of conduct.’

• 20/2/2007 - Human Rights Abuses in China

Posted by AngelaJames
The only way the could give out such cheap merchandise is if they do manufacture it in an area with low-labour costs such as China. The unfortunate thing is they have a reputation for human rights abuses. Whilst we do benefit from cheap production overseas and likewise foreign countries benefit from our exports, we need to be careful.
When I was in uni, without an income, I still refused to shop at discount stores such as Crazy Clarkes as they do just import truckloads of cheap crud from countries where workers are abused and this perpetuates the cycle.
I'm not against buying foreign made goods, but I am in favour of being careful where they're from.
But hey, Macdonals is every one's favourite company to beat up on - are other companies offering kids meals like this that much better?

• 20/2/2007 - A complex issue AJ

Firstly I would say that possibly the other Take Away food chains are getting their toys in the same manner, but I cannot say either way. But the article wasn't just targeting Maccas as the article does mention Mattel and Disney.

Given that you have done a Masters on Ethical Investment, you are probably more knowledgeable in this area than me. But as an example the 7 most boycotted companies in 2005 were: Nike, Coke, McDonalds, Nestle, Adidas, Gap and Burger King, according to a poll of 15,500 consumers in 17 countries - www.GMIpoll.com

The issue is complex because we have to be careful when we boycott a product due to substandard pay/conditions in poorer countries, because by boycotting the product we may actually put these people we are trying to help out of a job. But when the actual employees are complaining about their conditions and taking action then it is obvious that we as Westerners do need to take notice and try and source out what would be appropriate action to help these people.

Thanks AJ,

.... however, it is a challenge. Whilst the companies you mentioned have been boycotted, most of the Western McWorld yawns in its complacency. Though each time you and I speak up, we make a difference.

• 21/2/2007 - That's right!

Someone has to speak out so that others know about these issues and the more people that speak out the more people will hopefully listen.

That's my hope anyway,
