27/1/2007 - I believe...sometimes!

.. Posted in Emails

This is dedicated to
those Born 1930-1979!

TO ALL THE KIDS
WHO SURVIVED the
1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.  Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because .

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day.

And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound, CD's or Ipods, no cell! phones!, no personal computers , no Internet or chat rooms.......
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang

the bell, or just walked in and talked to them !

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.

They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them . . CONGRATULATIONS!

(Share your stories, memories, nostalgia)….

 HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY (WEEKEND)!

26/1/2007 - Which one is you, Dee?

And every time I look in you're all doing the leg waving thing. Isn't it tiring?

26/1/2007 - Having a break.....

Well I dunno,.... I do pause for a short break and do a spot of reading, Snowy. Must be everytime you step out for 'your' break.

I believe that....Reading whilst sunbathing makes you well-red.

26/1/2007 - Yes, there's times I get a bit nostalgic for the "good old days"

Posted by snowy
But I wouldn't want to go back there. I do agree that it is tougher for kids today than in mine. Drugs being the main difference, I think.

But I think the technological advances kids now enjoy means that they are far better informed than my generaton ever was. Some would argue that this isn't necessarily a good thing, but I think it is. We have to move forward, accepting the good with the bad.

Because that's the way it is. And always will be.

26/1/2007 - In 'my' day

Posted by deena
In my day:
"grass" was mowed,
"coke" was a cold soft drink,
"pot" was something your mother cooked in and
"rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.
"Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,
"chip" meant a piece of wood,
"hardware" was found in a hardware store and
"software" wasn't even a word.

But I agree with your thought of moving on too. I know of one great dad, that has set up his children with a blog. Uses it a bit of educator/punishment (type scenario). Each time they act up or bored, he sends them to their room to swat out 400 words. And I can tell you, from the quality Ive seen of that; I wished I hadve the same discipline when I was young. Very impressive!

Guess its nice to have a trip down 'nostalgia' lane sometimes. I could think of plenty other (threads / thoughts / reminiscences)......you?

26/1/2007 - Dancing

Posted by snowy
I do think that kids miss out badly in the dancing department compared to my day. Standing there gyrating in a crowded room with deafening music and flashing lights just doesn't compare with the ballroom dancing of my young days. How do kids ever get to communicate?

26/1/2007 - Now that IS a crying shame

Posted by deena
Tragically I didn't get much trot at that either Snowy. I hung on every word of the 'dance' stories my mum used to relate. How civilised, dressed all afresh, feminine, attending the town halls where the dances used to be held. A place you could even venture alone if preferred. Not only could you converse, but you could see, and a crowd in those days, still enabled to stretch your arms out with room to move.

I would love to visit 'those' times perhaps temporarily, (a borrowed time machine), with what I know now.

What a glorious time it would be. As we do with today, there is that tendency to waste what is precious about our times.

Im sure even then, there were those that thought the term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. ha ha

I am sure that very soon we will see some similar scenes of Kitty in the US snow :-P But I am sure she will be able to fly.

29/1/2007 - Memory lane

Posted by plonka
Personally I think we're a bit over policed these days. When my boy fell out of the tree when he was 6 or so, we got a filthy look from the nurse and she asked why he was climbing a tree in the first place. I laughed, she was even less impressed. It didn't do him any harm though and taught him once and for all to stick to the thicker branches, like mum and dad had been telling him.

Sometimes there's just no substitute for learning the hard way. We may shake our heads and say "I told you so" as we lovingly apply the band-aid, but if you've never thought "I know she told me not to, but I wonder what happens if I DO...ooops..." then you haven't really lived.

But I reckon I have to agree with both Deena and Snowy though. Technology has been both a help and a hindrance. Yes, it can be used for punishment and entertainment alike, but there is such a thing as to much of a good thing. The cure for that I've found is to kick them out occassionally. They used to ask me what they could do. My answer is always, "go be kids! Get into trouble, but not to much because you know how annoyed I'll be if I find out." It worked, now they go do "stuff". I don't ask....

A most excellent and bodacious post Dee...:)

Oh... I'm sure LOL... and I don't doubt for a second that her pictures /story of her attempting to fly in the US snow will give us all a belly laugh too (us - her audience damn near demands it of her now)! LOL.

Wonder if she'll use the blue blankie as her superhero cape?
